Beltran for Ramirez?

Did anyone else read Bob Klapisch's article on ESPN.com today talking about the Mets' offseason moves and how they should have a clearer path to the playoffs than the Yankees? Well, there was a part in there about Minaya still trying to get Manny from Boston. One deal he was trying to get done was to trade Benson to Texas for Juan Dominguez and Laynce Nix and then packaging those guys with Beltran for Manny.  Is anyone else outraged by even the thought of that deal? I probably wouldn't even trade Beltran for Manny straight up (because of his speed, defense, and age).  And if they got Dominguez and Nix for Benson, they should keep the 2 guys and help solidify the bullpen and right field.

I just hope Omar isn't gonna go too far with this Manny thing.

Awful
I read this proposal but elected not to say anything about it in the hope that it would just go away. Trading Beltran for Ramirez would be a disaster; short-sighted and inexplicably counterproductive.

Definitely
And I wouldn't be surprised to see Beltran perform like he did in 2004 in Boston.  But with the spotlight taken off him somewhat, he should ease in to his (IT BETTER BE THE) two spot in the order and not third.  But thankfully, Beltran has openly stated that he wants to show us that he can perform here, and he has a no-trade clause, so I think he is safe.

I don't know...
Isn't it at least worth considering such a deal, even if it's ultimately rejected?  I could imagine a set of circumstances in which a straight swap of the two players was good for the Mets.  (I'm ignoring the other stuff about throwing more players into the mix, because those deals would clearly be too lopsided.)  If our best projections said (a) Beltran's hitting was unlikely to rebound to superstar levels and (b) Milledge was likely to be able to play a decent major-league CF in 2007 and (c) Manny was likely to continue to hit well for the remainder of his contract, then the trade might be worth considering.  I'm not saying I believe any of those things are true (though I think some of them are more dubious than others), but it seems premature to simply reject this out of hand.  Beltran's contract is long and expensive, probably a little too long and too expensive; Manny's contract term is getting shorter even if he's still expensive.

maybe it's just me....
If we traded Beltran after he was begged pretty much to come to NY i think it will come back to bite us in the ass. Why you ask, because no other free agent will feel safe going to the Mets. i'm not saying nobody will go to the Mets i just think it will be harder to "woo" players to come here...That's just me though
...that's just crazy talk

I'm doing a little study on the NL East and thought I'd share an interesting little tidbit. To all of the self-loathing Mets fans/lazy 'MLB insiders' and journalistic parrots who have 1) Condemned the entire Mets organization as a joke 2) Written off this core's impressive run to date and 3) Deified the Phillies as unstoppable juggernauts w/ no chance to lose this division:

Yes, those wins are weighted towards '06-'07 and yes, the Phillies' are more recent but the fact remains that no other team in that span can even come close to the Mets total of days in first place, which should be garnering a lot more respect than it has. If only because we still have nearly the same core in place that has clearly had a lot of success and health-willing can very easily do so again in 2010.
