Diaz

Someone remind me why we are excited about Victor Diaz?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for letting a young guy with some punch get more at-bats and seeing if he surprises us by developing into a star.  There's no reason for this team to go with washed-up ex-ballplayers (sorry, "veteran character guys") over kids with some promise.

But, at this point, what makes Diaz more than another Jeff Keppinger or Ty Wigginton?  He looks to me like another good young pickup who'll pan out as a decent bench IF/OF in NY or a regular 2B for a small-market team as the throw-in in some deal.  The move to the outfield makes his batting numbers not too impressive, and he seems like a long shot to stick in the majors for the Mets.  Is the excitement just because he's the only thing close to a major-league-ready prospect with offensive impact that we have?
