Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

Open Thread: Mets vs Tigers (03/24/2005)

Victor Zambrano goes for the Mets today in Port St. Lucie. His pitching line thus far?

9 IP, 15 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 9 BB, 5 K

U.G.L.Y. Rick Peterson claims that he's healthy now, which is more important than pitching adequately in Spring Training. While that's true to a point, it would make me feel a whole lot better if he could get the walks and hits down and the strikeouts up.

My prediction for 2005: 140 IP, 10-10, 4.50 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 100/100 K/BB.

How do you think he'll do?

Kool-Aid anyone?
I'm actually swallowing the company line here and going with the "he hasn't pitched in a bajillion months, he's rusty, yaddayadda..."

For the season, hmmmmm....

I say he gets to about 160 IP, goes about 12-9, 4.7something ERA, 1.60 whip, 100/90 K/BB

What can I say?  I'm a cockeyed optimist...

My line on Z
120IP, 7-10, 5.0 ERA, 1.90WHIP, 75/90 K/BB

Fifth starter, missing nearly two months.

Hey, with expectations as low as that, I'm all set to be a fan of his come September!

"Rick Peterson effect"?
Have we seen any evidence yet, anywhere, of the fabled Rick Peterson improvements?  The "I can fix Zambrano in 10 minutes" claim only put Peterson on thin ice, as far as I can see.  But even with the A's, did he actually have a measurable effect on pitchers?

No Leo Mazzone
I think averaging both those lines sound about right.  Sadly, if he actually does have a good season, I believe he's a free agent next year.(if I'm not mistaken) Which means he'll get Kris Benson $ when he resigns.  Kazmir will probably outpitch Zambrano THIS season, let alone at low dollars.

RE: Free Agency
Zambrano is in his first year of arbitration with two years remaining. So long as the Mets are content to bring him to arbitration, he can't become a free agent until 2008.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
