10 Game Challenge (w/Poll)

This next stretch of ten games in a row is really going to show us what this team is (or isn't).  The Yankees series is probably a circus where anything could happen -- it's hard to tell how good or bad the Yankees are right now.  But then you know what we're getting with the Braves and Marlins.

Star-divide

I'm predicting 5-5, which would be a result that indicates this is a team that could compete or at least hang in there for the playoff race.  (Ultimately, I think we're going to come up short this year, but I'd bet that at the end of the season we'll be within 5 games of either NL East leader or the wild card).

I think we're going to beat the Yanks twice, lose two to the Braves (because we always do), and split with Florida (hopefully we'll face Leiter again).

6-4 or 5-5
I like the Mets chances of winning the Atlanta series.  The Braves have been scuffling, having been swept by the Padres and with their closer situation in turmoil, and the Mets won't have to face either Smoltz or the injured Thompson.

I'm worried about opening the subway series with Zambrano, though with Brown on the hill for the Yanks, maybe the Mets can pull off a 10-9 slug fest. I'm also concerned about closing the series with a potentially gimpy Pedro.

Splitting the fish series would be a moral victory.

agree
Yes, I'm predicting slugfest tonight.  I actually like our chances tonight slightly more than tomorrow's chance (nothing against Benson, he just ain't Randy).

I think the Thompson injury is big -- he pitches much better against us than anyone else.

6-4
I think we'll take 2 from the yankees, 2 from the braves, 2 from the marlins.  The braves are overrated and the yankees defense and pen are terrible.  These mets are a confident bunch who make things happen and won't roll over for the braves and yankees.

Braves
Let's hope you're right.  I think 6-4 is more likely now that Thompson's on the DL, but we just flat out suck when we play in Atlanta.  Maybe that turns around this week.

Also encouraging is that someone finally beat Dontrelle Willis last week.  He looked unstoppable up until then.

Optimism
I'm glad to see the optimism of the 6-4, but it's surprising.  Not many pegged us to .600 team this year, so why would we do it against a hot Yankee team and against to winning competitors on the road?  This is one of our tougher stretches --why would we be better than usual?

4-6
If you were one of the six people who predicted 4-6, you are a winner.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
