Is Omar getting value for our young arms?
Lessee...Seo for...Duaner Sanchez?
Gaby Hernandez for...Paul Lo Duca?
Aaron Heilman for...
Wait. Stop me there.
We don't even have Pelfrey signed, and Humber's going to start pitching with a piece of his leg later this summer. Meanwhile, one thought the strategy all along was to stock up on young arms, to pull a Florida perhaps, or at least be able to get top dollar for them on the trade market.
But have we really gone that far from Kazmir-for-Zambrano?

Arms
Seo for Sanchez was a bit different. Seo isn't that young to begin with (29 in May) and he's certainly not an accomplished pitcher. He had a nice season in 2003 and a terrific second half last season, but there's plenty of evidence to suggest that he's not a very good pitcher at all. Duaner Sanchez doesn't look like anything special, but he's not awful, either. I probably wouldn't have made the trade myself, but it wasn't an awful deal by any stretch.
I don't think Heilman will be traded this offseason; he is young, cheap, and good, so I think he'll be fighting for a rotation spot with Victor Zambrano in Spring Training and at the very least will be a 7th or 8th inning guy for the Mets this season.
Duaner
But it's possible to be bullish on Duaner Sanchez, too -- he had a similar last season to Seo's, in fact, where it looks possible he finally figured things out and will now be a good pitcher. His K rate really spiked last season, for instance. I don't know how it all will turn out, but if Sanchez did cross some kind of hurdle and learn to pitch effectively last year, it's not a bad deal -- and if that's true and Seo fizzles rather than maintaining his level from 2005, it's actually a great deal.
