Mets Express

Has anyone taken the Mets Express from the NY Waterway Taxis?  I am thinking about taking it for tonight's game, but can't decide if it is worth it.  Can't figure out where it drops you off near Shea.  I usually take the LIRR but the lines for getting back to the train have been unreal, and trying to find a way to avoid the lines.

I've taken it a couple of times
It's pretty awesome on a nice day.  Might not be as enjoyable if it's overcast, but it definitely will be better than the trains.  No matter what the weather is, you do get good views from the water of stuff you've probably never seen before, such as Rikers Island, LaGuardia, some power plants and sewage facilities, and the Triboro Bridge and the Manhattan skyline.

It's kinda pricey ($18 round trip), but they serve beer on board.

It drops you off at this marina in Flushing Bay, due north of the stadium and closest to Gate A.  It's just on the other side of Northern Blvd.  It's about a five- to ten-minute walk from the dock to the gate.  I'd say it's totally worth a try, especially if you're looking for comfort/no lines.

Thanks
I am at Gate B tonight.  So I am going to try it out.  Don't have to walk around the entire stadium now, and the tickets are free (work), so the $18 is nothing for no lines, and a Met win!

So how was the boat, Schifftis?

Perfect
Left 34th street at 6:45.. a nice ride and a few beers, reached the stadium at 7:30.. in my seats in time for intros.. and once the game ended, no crowds getting back to the boat.. was back at 34th by 12:30.. its nice riding the boat both ways with the same people.. particularly when the mets win! I plan on taking it the rest of the playoffs (if I get a hold of anymore tickets)

On the way there, going up the east river, we saw a perfect view of where cory's plane hit.. whole boat stopped to look, very quiet.. very weird..

Gonna try it tonight.

yeah, it turned into a nice day yesterday
Was kinda gray in the morning but brightened up.  The Water Taxi rules.

Weird about the Cory Lidle thing, though.  I didn't even think of that.

Did you see the prison barge?  It's this huge floating structure across from Rikers that houses god knows how much overflow from there.  Yikes.

Prison barge?
Jeez - it's the ghost of the prison ships of Wallabout Bay.

You're with me, ironic revisitation of historical tragedies.

perspective
Try to see if you can make out the basketbal courts (and players) atop the Rikers barge... you have no idea just how big that structure is until you see how small a 10' hoop is in perspective.

(Also, smell the bread--RIkers bakes its own, and it's incongruously delightful in the air.)

I did it like this / I did it like that / I did it with a Wiffle Ball bat

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
