Notes:

This is the Endy shirt:

It has come up against six opponents, and six times the Mets walked away victorious. I'm not really a superstitious person, but you can be sure that I'll be wearing it, untouched by detergent of any kind, until the Mets come up short. Endy shirt will really earn its money tonight if the Mets come away with a win. Chris Carpenter is tough. Beatable, but tough. The Mets won last night without any help from the bat (or legs) of Jose Reyes. Look for him to have a big impact tonight.

UPDATE: Oh Endy Shirt, what did I do to deserve this? To the wash with you!.

Go you Mets!
Here's hoping that Will Leitch is there tonight.  Between him and the Endy shirt, we just may have the mojo to overcome the Carp.
"He even tried to pimp it," Floyd said. "He's got no pimp." Said Wright: "I don't even know what that means."

It's hard not to feel an affinity for Chavez, a player who always greets people with a huge smile and warm, brown eyes. With his locker in the clubhouse bordering Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado, Chavez often is dwarfed by the two superstars, and he's usually spotted before games sitting alone playing golf on his handheld Playstation video game.

Teammate and catcher Ramon Castro, who was playing for Puerto Rico four years ago in the Caribbean World Series, witnessed how the fans embraced Chavez. Castro said it's because Chavez always plays hard, is aggressive, and is one of those guys who "likes to get dirty and dive, steal a base and everything."

let's go Mets!
Hope the lucky shirt can carry us through tonight.  I am supposed to be hosting a large group of people for dinner at my house tonight.  Instead, I am cooking dinner and then watching the game, and my friends can eat and watch with me or leave me alone.  I'll be damned if a social life will keep me from seeing this game.

But my posting may suffer for it.

I'm off to Shea
The Mets are three for three when I've been there to cheer them on this postseason.

The Mets are four for four since the second season started.

Coincidence?  I think not.

Let's go Mets!

Watching the other league now
If the Mets play the Tigers in the fall classic, it could either be ugly or a series for the ages.

Hat vs. Shirt
Hat's still an unbeaten winner too, Eric.

It's funny; I am one of the least superstitious people you'll ever meet, but when the Mets enter the playoffs I become a different person. I snap at people left and right, I'm always on edge, and I become the most superstitious person in the world.

Same here

However, I did drive the car today, and I made it home alive, so I consider that a decent start.

Someone Needs To Step Up
Through 5 games in the playoffs, we've won 4.  But, now it's time, someone has GOT to step up and make a quality start!  Maine and Trax are NOT doing the job.  Four or five innings is NOT acceptable.

Trax has got to step up in Game 3 and give us the performance boost we need.  We can not rest all our hopes on Glavine.  When two quality starters go down, the rest of the staff has to pick up the slack.

The time to pick up the slack is NOW.

yo, no whining
I thought this was going to be a long series. The Cards weren't going to roll over and play dead. We'll be out there tomorrow. We knew all along the problem was getting solid innings from starters which we didn't get today. Willie can't destroy bullpen-maybe he should  use Bert for a change. Did you notice that every damn move LaRussa made paid off-starting Speizio, putting Taguchi in at last second and bringing Rolen in to rob Wright. One thing I am totally sick to death of is the constant carping on the umping. His strike zone wasn't good, but he was the same for both teams.

Keep the faith.

ugly.
This was a painful, ugly, bad game to lose, and the least fun I've had watching a Mets game all year.  Instead of going to Busch on a high note, playing relaxed, and looking to win the series, the goal now has to be to get two of three there and take the series back to New York for the win.  (I mean, I'd love to take all three, but I don't see it happening.)  Unfortunate, but we can still take this series even if it takes a little longer than we might have hoped.

I think this one is all on the bullpen.  Mota's triple to Spiezio -- which Green couldn't squeeze, damn him -- isn't even as upsetting as the four-pitch walk to Edmonds preceding it.  And Wagner just had nothing tonight; he seemed to be trying to work only off his fastball, and it was getting clocked.  I agree with Gary Cohen's postgame comment that it was worse that Wags couldn't stop the bleeding afterwards than it was that he gave up a freak homer to Taguchi.   Upsetting to see one of the best bullpens in baseball spit the bit so thoroughly in such a key spot.  All we can hope is that this highlights the importance of every game from here on, and everyone gets their heads straightened out and moves on.  Long travel night, so the teams should both be pretty exhausted for tomorrow's game.  I'd love to see the Met offense capitalize on that and continue to hit in high gear.

I couldn't say it  better myself. Just had the uneasy feeling that this wasn't Mets night and you just have  to get more than 4 innings from your starter. Hell, if they can't get at least  5 from Trax and Perez the next two days it will probably be time to think about the hot stove league.

Good analysis
And the Tigers most certainly aren't going to roll over either. So we have to take these games seriously and overcoming the challenge is good. Willie will start to understand our (and perhaps his) limits before they are really tested in the series.

I'm thrilled with the offense tonight, actually. Reyes came alive, Delgado had a monster game, and several other players contributed in a game that we might forget was started by the Cy Young (probable repeater). Carpenter didn't beat us. Overuse of Mota and Wagner may well have.

by peeder on Oct 14, 2006 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

with Maine only going 4
what else was Willie to do but overuse his bullpen. Also, bullpen threw over 100 pitches tonite.St.Louis hitters had some great, long at bats that is also problematic. Add to that the fact that Anderson Hernandez was stupidly added to the roster at the expense of a pitcher (should have been Dave Williams).

Why no Woodward or Castro to pitch hit. I'm tired of seeing the old man either hit into dp or strike out on three pitches.

I wonder if hindsight will show that
Willie's biggest mistake is keeping Floyd on the roster instead of subbing Milledge and sitting Green. Think about it: speed in both corners, a strong arm in right, Green's bat off the bench, and a wee bit of batting potential from Milledge between strikeouts.
