METS LET ZAMBRANO GO Three years ago, the Mets were so eager to add Victor Zambrano to their pitching staff that they traded their best pitching prospect for him. That prospect, Scott Kazmir, was an All-Star last season for the Devil Rays, and Zambrano is now a free agent. The Mets declined last night to offer Zambrano a contract for next season. Jay Horwitz, a Mets spokesman, said the team still intended to negotiate with Zambrano, who had elbow surgery in May and was 10-14 with a 4.42 E.R.A. in parts of three seasons for the Mets.

The Mets also re-signed the left-hander Dave Williams to a one-year contract and offered contracts to four other arbitration-eligible players: pitchers Oliver Pérez and Duaner Sánchez, catcher Ramón Castro and outfielder Endy Chávez.
