Tribute video to Mike Piazza before his last game as a Met. I remember quite vividly so many of those swings. To this point, almost certainly the best offensive player in the history of the franchise.

Great Vid
I remember many of those swings as well.

I remember when we traded for Piazza, I was upset because it meant my favorite player (Todd Hundley) was on his way out.  I also hated Piazza in his Dodger days because he was just so damn good...but he grew on me REAL fast.  One of the greatest hitters of our generation, and one of the great Mets.  The way his arrival coincided with our return to respectability and competitiveness in the 90's I'll never forget.

Damn I miss Mikey.  :(

Ah the good old days
I'm not gonna lie, I got a little choked up watching that again. I also enjoyed the clip of him throwing out the only baserunner he gunned down at 2nd base in his time in NY.

Piazza's Last Game as a Met
I saw this video at Shea.  The night before his last game as a a Met I was drinking until  8 in the morning at my cousin's bachelor party.  I dragged myself out of bed a couple of hours later because I wanted to see the great Mike Piazza one last time as a Met.  The tribute was really nice.  If I remember correctly, they did it during the game in between innnings.  All of the Colorado bullpen pitchers came out onto the field to watch it.

I also remeber where I was when the Mets acquired Piazza.  I was at Jacobs Field for an Indian - Blue Jay game and they announced it over the PA.  The people in Cleveland had a hard time figuring out why I was yelling like a wacko.

yeah
I remember where I was when they acquired him as well.  I was 13 or 14, and it was late one evening after I had spent the whole day at our pool.  I was about to go out onto the porch where my dad was grilling some food, and saw on ESPN's bottom line "Florida Marlins trade C Mike Piazza to" and I kept on out..then I realized what I read so I ran back in and missed it...then 2-3 minutes later they started talking about the trade on baseball tonight or whatever show was on, and I couldn't believe it.

I remember, too...
My memory of hearing about the trade is weird.  I was at work at my first real job out of college, in downtown Denver.  For some reason, I had to walk to where my GF (at the time) was working to go somewhere.

I was done for the day and made a last check on ESPN.com to check the latest news and I sat the headline:

"Big Apple" (or something like that)

And my eyes read that Piazza was a Met and I suddenly felt the blood rushing through my body with excitement.

I practically ran the 10 blocks to where my GF was and was soooooooooooooooooo in a good mood.  My brain was racing.

Great trade.  Though, watching the video seems like eons ago.  Has it really been just a year since we had him?  Wow.

Will he retire as a Met or Dodger?  Interesting question.

The bigger momement for me is when he signed
To stay, I was in my Junior year at school. I was taking smack from all the Yankee fans who were saying he was leaving and we would get nothing for all those prospects, when he signed the contract I printed the ESPN article and taped it to their room doors.
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
