Perusing the internets, I saw a link to this site:
The site shows a list of sports figures and the amount of money they have given to political organizations over the past 25 years, as well as the percentage they have given to either party
I'm not much of a stat guy, but there appeared to be some notable trends in this list.
First of all, nearly all the golfers and race car drivers on the list gave more money to Republicans, John Daly being the notable exception.
On the other hand, most basketball players and coaches seemed to support the Democrats.
I noticed that many more famous jerks seemed to support the Republican side over the Democrats. (Bob Knight, Francescer, Marge Schott, Palmeiro, A-Rod, Bill Romanowski)
(To be fair, that Republican list also includes Vin Scully, Jerome Bettis, Yogi Berra, Gordie Howe, and Mario Lemieux.)
I was also surprised to see that Steinbrenner has given more to Democrats than Republicans. He always seemed like a hardcore Republican to me.
Obviously this is just for fun. Contributions aren't neccessarily an indication of ideological agreement, and the fact that more famous jerks contributed to one party rather than the other doesn't neccessarily lead to any conclusions about that party. It won't really change my opinion of an athlete to see that he or she support a political party I don't, but it was interesting to take a look at.
Since we were talking a bit about politics in the Leiter thread, I thought some might find this interesting.
