Open Thread - Game 2: Mets vs Nationals (04/05/2006) on SNY

Source: mlb.com

John Patterson was ninth in the National League last season with a 3.13 ERA, though his performance was not so much a product of his home ballpark, RFK, which is extremely generous to pitchers. Patterson's road ERA was 3.22 (3.08 at home), so he's good stuff wherever he's pitching.

Brian Bannister makes his big league debut tonight, so he'll try to get off to a fast start and keep the naysayers at bay.

make some noise
for the NY Mets!

Here's hoping that BB gets off on the right foot in his big league debut. Who would have predicted in February that VZ would go down with a tender hammy and Bannister would pitch the second game of the season.

Maybe VZ will need extra rest and Heilman will get a start too!

Mets Extra
... hearing that "Meet the Mets" lead in on WFAN for the first time in a year always sets my blood soaring.

Interesting: Willie just confirmed to Ed Coleman that the Anderson Hernandez bunting third strike in the first game was his, the manager's, choice.  Why?  He didn't really say, but he sort of implied he doesn't think Hernandez is really a hitter yet.

All right guys, I have to step out for the start of the game, unfortunately, but I hope to be back for the end.

I hope there's some good stuff to chatter about while I'm gone.

Let's go Mets!

nice debut inning
Though it sounds like Guillen really tagged one, it's still April at Shea and it takes a lot to get a ball out of the yard.

i'm assuming this game is on SNY.  I am watching on mlb.tv at work so i dont have any sound. but does sny not have any screen graphics to show the score/count/inning/runners on base or is that just in mlb.tv?

booing
Well, the booing was clearly audible on the radio after Beltran's strikeout.  Shame on you, fickle fans.  It's the second game of the season.  And there are still two more chances even in this inning.  I thought we wanted him to swing away!

On the other hand, giving a two-year deal to a bench player is never a good idea.  Not even a really good bench player, which Marlon is.  The deals he and the ancient Franco got were two of the sillier contracts signed this offseason, even if the Mets can afford to waste a million bucks here and there.

Wagner blew the save, but the Mets had every chance in the world to win this one in the bottom of the ninth.  If you blame Wagner for everything that happened after the Zimmerman HR, you've got to lay some blame on Lo Duca and maybe even the batters that preceded him for not driving Floyd home in the bottom of the ninth.

Willie has to take some of the blame.
You have to put some of the blame on Willie. You have to go for the win in the bottom of the 9th. Now I won't blame Willie for eschewing the bunt with Nady up because Nady has been hot. But you can't allow Anderson Hernandez to hit. He's totally over matched offensively. You've got to try and win right there and then. You don't play for extra innings because you don't know what will happen.

American league fans have told me what to expect from Julio so I was not surprised and Willie should not be surpirsed either. Terrible trade for him.

its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win

as long as we're dreaming,
why not go for 6?  By the time Anderson Hernandez comes up, he could have the game-winning hit for his first major league base knock.

Yep
He had one last year, last at-bat of the season. He's 1-for-30 as a big-leaguer.

Baserunners baserunners baserunners...

Evryone's still shittn dem brix
Bannister hits two guys but still keeps the score postive. Nady's earning his job. The lineup is functioning.

So a couple of mistake pitches were hurled and Julio is lost at the rubber. OK. Here's game 3.

2013 ALL-STAR GAME(TM) LOGO CONTEST

Major League Baseball has formally announced that Citi Field will be the site of the 2013 All-Star Game. (see video) In light of this, I have decided to launch an All-Star Game logo contest. To help get you started, I provided all of you with a sample All-Star Game logo. (click here to embiggen) If you wish to participate, please enter your submission with an image below, in the comments section. The contest ends on May 31st. I will choose a select number of finalists, and the community will vote on which of those logos is the best one.

Can you create a better logo than the sample logo provided? Then, give it a shot. Good luck to all participants!
Jon Rauch is awesome. Dan Tanna is, obviously, a fan of Greg Pomes.
LET'S GO METS GIF

By the way, I need some help here - is there any way to make this gif go faster? The "Let's" and "Go" sequences are only supposed to be 500 milliseconds each, and "Mets" a full second. Instead, each sequence is at least a full 1000 milliseconds (1 second) longer than it should be.
The first picture of a not devastated Tom Glavine after Game 162 of 2007 has finally been released.

(This is an old and kind of out of left field reference, but hey, we're playing the Marlins right now and John Maine just got released, so it's sort of relevant, plus I spent approximately 6.5 minutes making it and felt like I had to share.)
The reaction at Harrenhal Castle, payback was swift today!
