Anyone else
See Glavine's record against Pujols? Pujols is hitting around .500 but no HRs.

Let's hope that Glavine can lower that BA against him significantly.

by future on May 16, 2006 6:41 PM EDT reply actions

i think
Pujols will be lucky to see a pitch in strike zone all series.
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win

by DoctorK16 on May 16, 2006 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions

this
is as close to a "must-win" game as this team has seen yet.  Going in to a really tough stretch of opponents, coming off a poor road trip so far, and maybe the last favorable pitching matchup the Mets will see in a week (or till the next time Pedro goes).

and by the way,
the Gameday link above is busted -- the code for the Cardinals should be "slnmlb," not "stlmlb."

Thanks Blues.

Tonight's bad calls proudly brought to you by:
HP--Gary Cederstrom. 1B--Jim Reynolds. 2B--Tim Welke. 3B--Kerwin Danley.

Thanks Peeder
Now I can curse at them by name.

Glav hits Eckstein leading off the game
Not a good sign...he needs his control here in the 1st or the Cards will eat him alive.

by peeder on May 16, 2006 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

To be fair to Glavine
The pitch was a breaking ball and maybe 3 inches inside. Eckstein stood and took it.

by future on May 16, 2006 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

God I hate the St. Louis homers
Eckstein didn't even try to get out of the way and they're trying to explain to me that Eckstein flinching is an attempt to get out of the way.

by future on May 16, 2006 8:22 PM EDT reply actions

Glavine is going right
at Pujols. Hope this ends well.

by future on May 16, 2006 8:25 PM EDT reply actions

Phew
Pujols retired, though Eckstein advanced to second.

9 for 18 now, Pujols vs. Glavine.

Delgado
got fooled there, good pitching by Suppan to get Delgado to expand the zone to around Carlos' eyeballs.

Missed
the top of the first what happened with Reyes?

by udamnwright on May 16, 2006 8:36 PM EDT reply actions

Reyes
Got on via the second basemen muffing the groundball.

On first base, he's picked off by Suppan, even though he clearly gets his hand back in before the tag, and the umpire had a great view.

Called him out.

by future on May 16, 2006 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks
I appreciate it. Never fails a bad call a day must keep the doctor away oh wait we hav injuries everywhere.

by udamnwright on May 16, 2006 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't mind bad calls
they are a part of baseball. But man, since that terrible game with Angel Hernandez, we have been on the butt-end of the bad calls much more often than being the beneficiary.

by future on May 16, 2006 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

The implication would be
that the umpiring union is sending the Mets a clear message that what's said on the field stays on the field.

How long will it take for that message to yield a return receipt? Singles turned into homers?

by peeder on May 16, 2006 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

a delmon Young
or Pete Rose/Dave Pallone, or Carl Everett vs. Ronald Kulpa type incident is the likely return receipt/

by Art Vandaley on May 16, 2006 8:41 PM EDT reply actions

Cliffie!!
It has just been so painful watching him struggle.

Anyway, just now getting here. Missing the 1st inning.

by BlueYonder on May 16, 2006 8:42 PM EDT reply actions

Cliff roped that ball
but it comes to naught.

I hope that umpire gives Glavine that call. That pitch would have hit Eckstein in the butt.

Pujols Strike Zone
is about as tiny as Barry's was. :)

by future on May 16, 2006 9:23 PM EDT reply actions

A blogger I know
Was wondering...Pujols used to be a SS...he was never this big...and then he got absolutely huge...why does he get a free pass and others are vilified?

Because baseball needs its savior, and it is Albert.

by future on May 16, 2006 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

because
he hit the bigs while still young and filling out and he is going to have most of his career during the testing era.

by udamnwright on May 16, 2006 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think he gets a pass...
Has he ever even been rumored to do steroids? The guys who are villified, like Bonds, Giambi, Sheffield, Felix Heredia (had to throw that in there), all have connections to BALCO and have been flat out accused of it. I've never heard Pujols' name involved. Some guys are just flat out awesome...and he's one of them.

by big shea on May 16, 2006 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

no evidence
Or direct accusations. But there wasn't any against Sosa either and he is still tainted by the whole thing.

Yeah
Part of the homefield I guess. They should set minimum dimentions for all the parks though. The Crawford boxes in Houston, the little flower box in left at Citizen Bank Park, and what ever the hell they did in Cincy should be banned.

He made a perfect throw
As perfect as you could expect from his arm, which is not strong for a right fielder. It was accurate and just missed getting him.

I personally thought he was out on the initial reaction, but Lo Duca didn't block enough of the plate.

Never
read Doc's book. I think that learning the new position threw him out of whack and the shoulder problem may have come later but he never regained what he had after learning the change. If you are going to have a phenom learn a new pitch either do it in the minors or let him fail a little bit before you do it. This topic drives me crazy because Doc could have been Pedro if handled properly and he didn't snort it away.

in an odd way I do find it amusing that every time he gets mentioned anywhere, the Mets get hit with a comment.  I mean, everyone piles on, it's part disheartening, part amusing, part funny, part something else I'm not sure

Maybe
but I am not sure if the Mets are considered "other people" to me.

one last,last thing
It was like no trade i have ever seen made. I don't think there was a sole beside Duquette and Rick Peterson who thought the trade made any sense.I remember Gary Cohen saying that you always had to wait at least a couple of years to determine the wisdom of the trade. I think most of us had to wait about 2 minutes.

I screamed in my car when Eddie C announced it on the fat bastard and dumb dog show.

agreed.
Totally, completely incomprehensible.  I've known many instances where fans kicked and screamed irrationally about a trade.  This time, not only were we right (which could be mere coincidence), we were right for the right reasons, and the organization was deluding itself (Leiter and Peterson's egos taking over for the rational baseball judgment a GM is supposed to retain at all times).

Here's the worse
part. We could have traded Kazmir to Oakland that offseason and acquired Tim Hudson, instead the Brave get him. You can make a fair case if we have Tim Hudson instead of Atlanta we win the division last year. I still think theirs more to this story than we'll even know. It looks like Kazmir pissed off the wrong people in the organization, because they've leaked some pretty bad stuff about him since.

you know
we aren't the other team in NY. who never traded away a top prospect for nothing who went on to be a star. People in the media are two busy taking bukkake from the Yankees to talk objectively about the Mets.

plays well mets score at lot of runs and win. Its simple as that.

Reyes plays well
when I bench him on my fantasy team (don't have him on my Amazin Avenue team, unfortunately).

Tonight, of course, he's riding the pine in favor of Hanley Ramirez.  I think I'll leave him there for a while--I'd rather see my team fail and the Mets win.

You make it interesting, but you didn't allow a run.

Kudos to the whole team. Tommy threw a good ballgame, and all our hitters did something right at the plate.

Gotta love every win we get against a team we could see in the playoffs.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
