Open Thread - Game 40: Mets vs Cardinals (05/18/2006) on SNY

Source: mlb.com

It's kind of pathetic that Aaron Heilman is stuck in the bullpen and Lima Time! gets to go out there and embarrass himself (and the Mets organization) every fifth day. I'll consider it a quality start if he allows fewer runs than innings pitched, something he has yet to do in two previous attempts this season.

Let's go Mets!

2 batters 5 pitches out of game not sure why yet though. Get us some pitchers now.

Just read
over on Metsblog from people listening to the audio that he had a cramp in his injured leg but that it does not seem bad and was mostly a precaution. Still scary. I posted this question over there and wondering what others thought would anyone take a shot on Kerry Wood, if it did not take Milo, he is not signed for next year but if healthy he would be nasty behind Pedro and TG.

by udamnwright on May 18, 2006 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I would talke a flyer for wood
on a big discount though. At worse you could put him in Heilman's role and move AH to the rotation. He would be nasty along with Sanchez.
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win

That would
be my point or thought maybe a Carlos Gomez he is toolsy but has not fulfilled. It is a high risk reward for both sides.

*phew*
That's a relief. Lima Time! needs all the help he can get.

Not Long Now
If his next few starts are as good as this one the Mets will have to seriously consider bringing him up. He can't be any worse than Lima Time!, and he may be better than Bannister or Gonzalez.

by Eric Simon on May 18, 2006 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

To follow up, I would also much sooner bring Soler up than Pelfrey. Soler is already 26 and has pitched professional ball in Cuba; he is a much better candidate for promotion.

by Eric Simon on May 18, 2006 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree
We're already paying Soler the big bucks, he might as well move to the rotation and earn his cash, plus, we wouldn't be stunting his development.

by future on May 18, 2006 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree
he has the experience from Cuba and International(?). I say he should be up to take Lima's next start depending on how it goes today. Maybe he should start against Florida next weekend if the rotation can be jugled to avoid the this spot in the rotation.

Matsui
...is batting .247 with 1 HR and 5 RBI.  Doesn't seem like much improvement from last year.

by scchask on May 18, 2006 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

He missed the first 3 weeks
of the year. He has given little below league average production at 2b, and fielded well. The league isn't exactly stocked at that position with hitters.

Any one else surprised that the combination of that pitch and that swing ended up as a pop up to third?

by future on May 18, 2006 1:14 PM EDT reply actions

No
Though it never surprises me when the combination of a thrown ball and Valentin's bat results in a weak out of any variety.

by Eric Simon on May 18, 2006 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice of the umpire
To ask for some new baseballs and wipe off the plate to let Castro have a few moments to recover.

Not all blues hate us.

And a nice K by Lima.

I'd blame

I give

ahhh
lima time, why do you torment us?  good thing the pen is reasonably rested.

Soler time?

and i'm for giving Kaz a day off, but do we have to start Valentin AND start him at 2nd AND bat him 2nd.  He was just starting to perform well when expectations were at rock bottom.  Why raise them now?

Good hit by Delgado
At least we're not getting no-hit.

by future on May 18, 2006 1:33 PM EDT reply actions

Even though that at-bat
ended up with a pop out, that was a good at-bat by DWright, 10 pitches. We need more of those to get into the Cardinals middle relief.

by future on May 18, 2006 1:38 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah
just bothered by watching Lima, and that everyone besides Delgado and Wright let Marquis off the hook when he can't throw strikes.

by udamnwright on May 18, 2006 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

What was up with that 3-1
pitch to Castro? Was it at his shoulders or at his eyeballs?

I appreciate the aggressiveness, but when you have a free base, take it.

It is an idiotic decision
To throw the ball hard at Lima and not aim for the head.

by future on May 18, 2006 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

It was
Lima's fault he missed the ball. Look at a replay the offisial scorer changed the error to Lima and Darling said it was his fault.

by udamnwright on May 18, 2006 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I watched the replay
And we'll disagree, the throw was to the right of Lima and Lima instinctively got glove on it, but that was Delgado's fault entirely. Who throws that hard when you are that close?

That
was all on Lima. Why is everyone making excuses for this guy.

by udamnwright on May 18, 2006 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Dude
watch the replay. He's expecting a soft toss(which is what any sane person would have expected) and instead Delgado rifled it at him.

Delgado must have bet on the over and is just trying to make it happen all by the third inning.

However
Two runs weren't his fault. One was a bullet throw by Delgado that the scorer believes was Lima's fault(but I think was Delgado's) and the other being the absolutely terrible call at first base.

I'm not afraid of the Braves right now
Especially with Davies out for the season. One thing the Braves always had was luck with their starting rotation. Yes, there have been injuries to their starters in the field, but their rotation is in shambles and we're getting Bannister back and Maine in the next week and they'll have to find some way to not lose when Sosa takes the mound.

by future on May 18, 2006 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

from mlb.com
Twenty-two days after he strained his right hamstring, and one day after he tried to pitch in game for the first time since the original injury, Brian Bannister will be re-examined via MRI on Friday to determine the extent of the injury and the recovery. The Mets rookie pitcher is to be in New York for an examination that the Mets hope will tell them he didn't re-injure the hamstring on Thursday during his five-pitch cameo appearance in a Triple-A game.

"We don't know," assistant general manager John Ricco said on Thursday, "if he did more damage or if he just wasn't ready to come back. He felt some tightness and took himself out of the game."

I hope no re-injury, but
even if not, clearly his absence will be longer than expected. I just hope management sees what we fans do, i.e. that Lima needs to go. I'm in complete agreement with those who want Heilman moved into the rotation, arguing it'd be much easier to fill his spot in the bullpen than it would be to find a starter.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
