Mets as a Minority
After attending last night's amazin game, and reading the following post:

I was wondering, do we as Mets fans enjoying being the NY minority. Or would you rather be like the Yankees and have the majority of NY rooting for the team.
I know I enjoy being the minority (maybe it has something with growing up Jewish). I enjoy the us against them mentality, and the fact that as Mets fans, there seems to be a struggle to each season. We did not take the easy way out and join the evil empire, we understand anything worth acheiving should be earned.
So what are your thoughts?

Depends on what you mean by minority
If you mean the true die-hards, I'll argue that the Mets have more of them. Compare the Mets-Yankees situation to another metro-area rivalry, Dodgers-Angels. The Dodgers have more history and tradition than the Angels and lead the WS titles 5-1, yet the Angels have been far more successful in the last 5 years or so. The Angels recent success doesn't matter, as the Dodgers continue to outdraw the Angels. To me, it's obvious that the Dodgers have more die-hards among the SoCal audience.
The Mets trail the Yankees 26-2 in championships (or 7-2 since the Mets came into existence), yet the Mets have had significant stretches (1984-1992 and also from the mid-60s to the mid-70s) where they outdrew the Yankees. The Mets also had the best attendance in 2005 of any team that had a losing record in 2004. This year, the Mets are 5th in the majors in attendance. 3 of the 4 teams ahead of them were in the postseason each of the last 2 years. The 4th is the Dodgers who went in 2004, and have a good fanbase that shows up even after a 91-loss season.
I really believe the Mets have a better die-hard base than the Yankees, and the bandwagon vote is the only reason the Yankees have outdrawn the Mets of late.

Despite the name change
We're not the minority
Real New Yorkers are Met fans (with some exceptions obviously). The point above about Mets vs. Yankees attendance during the 80s is a great one. You never heard the Mets threaten to move to NJ did you?
There are plenty of Met fans out there, not to worry.
