Diary: Hamels Hurt

(moved from diaries --eric)

The Mets will be getting Jon Lieber tonight and Brett Myers on Thursday. Not sure this is a good thing, although Lieber and Myers will not be working on their normal rest. I know Hamels is supposed to be a stud, but it still would have been only his third professional start. Now the Mets face the Phillies' best pitcher in the series finale against Jeremi "Batting Practice" Gonzalez.

So,
...instead of getting their new ace, we get their older ace.  Whatever.  After last night, I got nothing but high hopes.

Unfair nickname
"Batting Practice" is awfully generous.  I prefer "Tee Ball".

WTF?
Why the F*** is Pedro not getting the start tomorrow?  These are the 2nd place Phillies, and last I checked, the Mets don't have much to offer in the 5th spot right now?  We can buy 5 more days of not going to #5 by skipping Jeremi this go around with the day off yesterday!

Why not??

Mike and the MadDog...
...were mouthing off about this yesterday.  I'm on the fence still.  If they manage to win tonight, then Pedro can sit, but if they lose, then it may be a very good idea to have him pitch.

I just don't know.  The season is only 1/4 finished, do the Mets NEED to use Pedro like that?

With Pedro it is about the long run
The Mets want to give Pedro extra rest whenever the have the chance.. they are concerned about having a healthy and dominate Pedro come August and September (and October).  This is one of the issues with having an ace who is known to wear down as the season goes on.

Earth to Willie/Omar
PUT DARREN OLIVER IN THE ROTATION!!!!!!  One half of the Lima/Gonzalez batting practice tandem is gone, time to dispose of the other half.  I know Oliver can't pitch on Thursday because of last night, but Thursday, barring a no-hitter or something, must be Gonzalez' last start.  You simply cannot keep Oliver and his 3 ERA and 1 WHIP in the bullpen when he'd be the #3 starter on this team, especially when Pedro Feliciano is doing a bang-up job of being the lefty out of the pen.  There is absolutely no reason for Oliver to stay in the pen.  None.
Free Darren Oliver! Let him start!

Not a bad idea
I remember Oliver coming in on short notice when Zambrano walked off the field against Atlanta.  He did a pretty decent job there.
