For those two hours, Martínez, the Mets star known for his intensity and cleverness on the mound and his quirkiness off it, is in the yard outside his six-bedroom Tudor revival home in Greenwich, Conn. He is planting. He is pruning. He is talking to his tulips. "What about you, beauty?" he will ask in language rarely, if ever, heard on a baseball field. "Aren't you going to grow up to be so pretty?"

I think it's tremendous that he gardens

and no joke at all...Something I do and highly recommend in place of drugs or whatever other stress management is out there.

I was more worried about the picture of him stopping down in those loose-fitting shoes...that toe! I would give him a whole line of protective footwear to wear all day every day.

I'm not surprised that he spends a lot of time in his garden. He seems like a really down-to-earth guy, in all of his interviews and stuff, and peeder is right, it is a great way to relax.

of course, if you are into drugs, you could always grow those in your garden.
