Magic Number Time?

Is it time for Eric to start running a box on the home page counting down the Mets' magic number to clinch the NL East? After the sweep of the Phillies, the magic number is 88. And it's only 85 to eliminate the Braves. I think it's a good idea, if only to erase the memory of the "tragic number" feature that ran here (and elsewhere) last year. But what do you think? I have to say, this is probably the earliest I've seen the words "magic number" used in any baseball season in my memory. It's exciting, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. I like the Mets' chances to win the division at this point -- but they have to keep playing solid over-.500 baseball to make those chances hold up.

I know it's early, and the post is half in jest,

but have you seen ESPN's latest power rankings? "Start printing those playoff tickets in Queens." The odds of blowing a 9 1/2 game lead, even in June, are miniscule. Lighten up and enjoy the ride!

Braves Wanker announcers

were saying that if the Mets play 1 game over .500 for the rest of the year, the Braves would need to play 25 games over .500 just to tie.

(the #s may be wrong, but the point is, the Mets, even after tonight's loss to the Os, are rolling, and the Braves suck.)

And while I can forgive some Mets fans for wanting to now what the magic # is, I think it's a little premature to start posting it on the site. Let's wait until it's under 20 before we start doing that.

In 86 they started computing it about this time

in the Post as I recall. We're fans, we should be able to get carried away. The players are the ones who have to keep their heads about them. Just my opinion - I respect others who want to wait until it gets closer to 50 with a 10 game lead or something.
