Diary: All-star Game Live Blogging thread

(moved from the diaries. hoffman = awful --eric)

Big applause for Jose Reyes from the Pitt crowd...we might not know how nationally popular our young stars are.

Bittersweet to see Kazmir lined up in someone else's uniform. Bay to an extent as well.

Feel free to use this to comment on the game, which might determine how many games we'll have in Shea later on... =)

Woulda been nice if the Pepsi truck commercial
used the turn signals and lights to have the "catcher give the sign".

Somewhat of a disappointing ending to the ad...

It happened...
I saw that happen at a Binghamton Mets game.  The anthem singer stopped cold in the middle of the song, pulled out a 3*5 card from her back pocket, looked at it, then continued.

Mo Cheeks and the girl
That seemed more like bad stage fright.  I think she knew the words, but just froze.  It's different than some dope not knowing them at all and needing a notecard to continue.
Keep Maine in the rotation!

Garner saying he won't manage
He'll be the manager, but he's not going to manage: "There will be no signs." Players can steal or swing when they want to.

And that may actually mean they do so less because they then have to be responsible both for the decision and the performance.

Garner is a true moron. How this guy gets a job in MLB is beyond me.

that is dumb
I remember when Scioscia managed in the first All-Star game after they instituted the stupid WS homefield rule.  Say what you want about Scioscia, but he managed that game to win, and his team won.

Dusty Baker, on the other hand...

Nice little tribute to Clemente
Except for Selig, who never seems to me to be any kind of "ambassador to the game."  He's out of place anywhere in a baseball park.

Joe Buck is an Atrocious Announcer
But it's hard to kill a guy for bringing up that trade. It is probably a top 10 worst trade in the history of the game when you consider the quality of the decision at the time. So it is fair game to bring up and point out.

I mean, if they showed Liriano or Pierzinski last night and I was announcing, I would definitely talk about how that was one of the worst trades ever - SF fans be damned.

BTW: why does Joe Buck always try to jump the gun on his calls? Like calling batted balls hits before they land that are later cuahgt for outs, and sort of forgetting the possibility that 3-2 pitches can be fouled off? Anyone else notice that?

Fox is horrible
They just missed that whole at-bat by Holliday because they were showing game-recap clips.  Literally, all they showed of him was a shot of him taking off his helmet and batting gloves.

I can't wait until they lose their baseball and football contracts to a real network.

Fuck
Dear Phil Garner, you suck whale penis. Who starts that POS pansy no diving Miguel Cabrera for the bottom of the ninth?

The highlight of the game for me
May well have been DW saying he and Reyes "bleed blue and orange."

May they never wear another uniform.

by peeder on Jul 12, 2006 12:13 AM EDT reply actions

Amen to that!
DW's HR and Beltran's hits, steals, etc. were also terrific.

by Max in NJ on Jul 12, 2006 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions

even Kruk of all people made a good point
last night after the game:

Why did Garner not put in anyone for defense in the ninth?  Scott Rolen might have fielded that ball at third, and he could have put in Andruw Jones in center and moved Beltran to left for Carlos Lee.

by kingcritical on Jul 12, 2006 8:18 AM EDT reply actions

Because
He wasn't interested in winning, just making sure people got their at-bats.

:rolls eyes:

I love how Joe Buck said that the managers were managing the game like it was Game 7. If it's Game fucking 7 I want Scott Rolen at third.

I want Andruw Jones in left, Carlos Beltran in Center, and name a great defensive right fielder in RF.

God, I'm also wondering how Cabrera didn't even TRY to get that ball.

As was posted earlier
It was Guillen who said he was going to manage that way...Garner said he wasn't going to manage at all.

Wright is on Letterman tonight
as part of ongoing festivities in his All-star coming-out party...

(Coming out in the sense of debut to the broader public, i.e. they've determined this kid is a star and now we're celebrating him...hope he gets a WS ring at the culmination.)

As opposed to coming out in the sense of

At least another 5000 marriage proposals faxed to the clubhouse. the team makes $11.68 on each of those, you know.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
