After a demoralizing 1-5 swing through Beantown and the Bronx, the Mets are in desperate need for the comfort of home and the impotence of the National League.

W2 and L2 are the expected wins and losses based on BP's equivalence runs scored and allowed.
W3 and L3 are similar to W2 and L2 but adjusted for strength of schedule.

The Pirates have actually underperformed their expected record by more than five games, which is outrageously high for a half-season. In fact, their raw pythagorean record is a full *eight* games better than their actual record.

Former ace Oliver Perez was recently demoted to AAA, so this is what's left. Kip Wells spent much of the season on the disabled list and the rest of it pitching poorly. Ian Snell is the only one with even respectable peripherals and his ERA is 5.00 even. The Pirates' struggles start with this rotation, and it's no wonder they are in the NL Central cellar. Again.

Some fine hitters here, none moreso than Jason Bay, though Freddy Sanchez is having a breakout season at third base. With the exception of Jack Wilson (thankfully he won't be going to the All Star game), most of thtese guys can hit.

Gonzalez and Hernandez have been impressive, though their walk rates leave a lot to be desired. Pretty decent collection of arms here, actually, and far superior to what they've got in the rotation.

Not much to write home about here except for Craig Wilson, who actually starts more often than Sean Casey at first base. Rotoworld lists Casey as the starter, so...

Nosebleed Seats for Fireworks
I'm going tonight--preordered nosebleed seats. Problem is--I don't wanna go. [Ain't just because Martinez is finally addressing the hip issue--and why so late?--a hopeful rejection of Zambranoism*???]I'd dump the tix in a sec if I weren't taking an old friend. The Pirates can be winless. The Mets think they can roll; maybe they can win easily at .500 in a crap division. But this isn't the team I bought the tix for 6 weeks ago. I don't buy solo-HR tix. I like a team that plays team ball, knows the basepaths, gets the clutch hits, knows how to adjust to ballpark dimensions, reads defenses, pounds-up pitch counts to hit weak bullpens. Willie better wake them up--fast.

*Zambranoism: A selfish act of covering injury to self to preserve career that endangers the well-being of team.

Just wondering: Are you holding Pedro
alone responsible for the hip thing? It's not just his call. The Mets have been well aware of this problem ever since he slipped and fell in Florida. It's one thing if management has no clue, but they've known. I hold management responsible for not resting Pedro sooner. A pitcher is always going to say he's OK to take the ball. Do we have to rehash what happened in the ALCS in 2003?

As for the rest of your complaints -- jeez, every team goes through funks. You sound like a fair weather fan.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
