What about something besides these stupid open threads?  Analysis? Rumors? Podcasts? If I wanted a play by play account of the games, I'd just go to the ESPN message boards.  Cmmon - step it up!!!  If you want a real Mets blog, you should go to metsblog.com...

Alright, I'm done...

Gonna miss the beginning of the game
on account of brunch.  But, here's hoping that Tommy G continues the trend of Mets starters getting back on form.

And happy birthday Flaky!

What's the biggest dilemma Mets fans face this season?

Deciding who deserves the "MVP" cheer -- and the NL MVP awawrd at the end of the season.

Man, is it nice to root for a good team.

by anonymous on Jul 30, 2006 1:41 PM EDT reply actions

seriously, though:
who do you pick?  I have to go with Beltran at this point, though Wright has probably just as strong a case and might draw more votes because of his gaudier batting average.  I have to think one of the two will take the NL MVP this year, with Pujols (and Bonds, though he has no real chance this year) spending significant time on the shelf.  Who else would be the competition?

Lance Berkman is having a big year, maybe Nomar is in the mix too, Rolen is having a big year too.

yes it is
But its gotta be Beltran 31 HR/93 RBI, playing CF like a superstar. Clutch hit after clutch hit. To me he gotta be in the MVP of the team and possibly the league. 16 million is looking cheap considering that the Skanees are paying Randy Johnson the same money not to get out of the 4th against the D-Rays.

Glavine is currently in a vortex of suckitude.
Hope he can pull himself out of the terlit one of these days.

Anyone else see that note on the Mets' site about next years' mutual options on Glavine?  When the Mets reloaded his contract during the spring, they GAVE him not only a free option for next year, but they also an addition 2 MILL bonus if he makes the All-Star game.  All of which, Glavine noted, he didn't particularly want, because he wanted his "freedom" after this season.

Troubling, if you ask me.  But I'll overlook it if he could figure out how to friggin' pitch or drop a bunt down again.

"The Mets with the bases loaded: Chavez, great speed, Reyes, great speed, Lo Duca, good guy."

by Mr. Met on Jul 30, 2006 2:15 PM EDT reply actions

reading that
I wonder if both sides are trying to orchistrate a tidy divorce. Omar didn't sign Glavine and maybe skeptical about his ability to continue to pitch well, remember it was Omar that put the coup de grace to Al Leiter's Met career, and thank God he did. Maybe Glavine wife is anti-NYC suburbs or something. This getting weirder, but it might work out for the Mets if Glavine is really declining and he walks.

by DoctorK16 on Jul 30, 2006 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

It's possible. Glavine's always been a mystery.
He won with smoke and mirrors for years on crappy calls, then the umps tightenend up and he sucked at a Trachsel-esque level, then somehow figured something out last year at the break and was great for a year, until a month ago, and now he sucks again.  Hard to know which way he will go next, but if he was a free agent, would you sign him for 12 mill for a year with a 2 mill AS bonus?  He may have other bonuses as well, I'm sure he does.  I doubt seriously that I would.

Having said that, I suppose I would
reserve judgement until after seeing him pitch in the playoffs.

by Mr. Met on Jul 30, 2006 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

The thing is
I know exactly what you mean about Glavine's career trajectory, but ultimately we're talking about a HOF career.  It just seems hard for me to believe that you could build that pretty much exclusively on bad calls.  Obviously the tighter strike zone affected his game more than other pitchers', but still you have to give him credit for using what was available to him.  Seems hard for me to call that just "smoke and mirrors."

Still, your basic point is sound - if he's not going to get the same strike zone anymore as he did earlier in his career, then his success depends on how well he has adjusted to that.  From June of last year to June of this year, it looked like he finally had made the adjustment.  Now he's having a crappy month, but we'll have to reserve judgment on whether that means he's lost whatever it was he figured out.

by Billy Everyteen on Jul 30, 2006 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

that 2 million bonus
is crazy. If you're paying a guy 12 million he probably should be making the AS Team. With that said if Glavine is the pitcher he was for the last year, he probably worth the money in this market for starting pitching, at least for one year, nothing long term at 40 years. AJ Burnett makes that much per year, Beckett just got 10 million per hasn't been great this year. Hudson getting that much to stink, as is Mulder, and Randy Johnson.

well Willie with you guys
I remember last year Willie said he wasn't the mushy type, he wasn't kidding.

Willie did
the right thing with Glavine. I hope he can get it back together cause I wouldn't feel comfortable  with him pitching game 2 of the NLCS

Seriously
All this talk about #3, and nobody mentions the growing elephant in the room, which is #2.

Still only a baby elephant, but let's hope Glavine gets it back together soon...

without giving up two out runs.

that is what has been concerning me about Glavine
the most lately.  His inability to get out of innings.  Lots of two out rbi's against him it seems like anyway.

And 2-strike hits. Similar phenominon.

You know
if it's two outs when Oliver comes to bat...why not let him hit since it's only the 6th right now?

This move is stupid by Willie.

I agree
He couldn't double switch Oliver because he wasn't going to burn a guy off his bench when Cliff can't play the field. I get that. But 2 out nobody on let Oliver hit and save Cliff for later.

To me
it was less saving Floyd for later, it was more about using Oliver for another two innings.

wasting the only left power bat off the bench
with no one on base, up three in the top of the 6th inning.  Really is an odd move.  What if the Braves continue to rally and we need that bat later in the game?

I smell blood in the water.  No mercy for the Marlins!  None for the Phillies next weekend at Shea!  I want them both DESTROYED!  I want a 20 GAME LEAD!  MWA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

2013 ALL-STAR GAME(TM) LOGO CONTEST

Major League Baseball has formally announced that Citi Field will be the site of the 2013 All-Star Game. (see video) In light of this, I have decided to launch an All-Star Game logo contest. To help get you started, I provided all of you with a sample All-Star Game logo. (click here to embiggen) If you wish to participate, please enter your submission with an image below, in the comments section. The contest ends on May 31st. I will choose a select number of finalists, and the community will vote on which of those logos is the best one.

Can you create a better logo than the sample logo provided? Then, give it a shot. Good luck to all participants!
Jon Rauch is awesome. Dan Tanna is, obviously, a fan of Greg Pomes.
LET'S GO METS GIF

By the way, I need some help here - is there any way to make this gif go faster? The "Let's" and "Go" sequences are only supposed to be 500 milliseconds each, and "Mets" a full second. Instead, each sequence is at least a full 1000 milliseconds (1 second) longer than it should be.
The first picture of a not devastated Tom Glavine after Game 162 of 2007 has finally been released.

(This is an old and kind of out of left field reference, but hey, we're playing the Marlins right now and John Maine just got released, so it's sort of relevant, plus I spent approximately 6.5 minutes making it and felt like I had to share.)
The reaction at Harrenhal Castle, payback was swift today!
