Rumor Central: Oswalt or Schimidt for Milledge

...According to SI.

"The New York Mets are engaged in serious talks for two superb starting pitchers who carry the potential to stamp them as a World Series favorite -- Giants right-hander Jason Schmidt and, in something of a shocker, the Astros' Roy Oswalt -- league sources told SI.com.

Mets general manager Omar Minaya was debating late Sunday night whether to surrender one of the biggest pieces of the Mets' future to acquire either Schmidt or Oswalt and greatly enhance his team's immediate chances. The asking price for both Schmidt and Oswalt is believed to revolve around multi-talented young outfielder Lastings Milledge."

In my opinion, I hope they go for Oswalt.

I'm reading
that the Giants intend to make a big push to re-sign Schmidt after the season.  He's also talked about going to Seattle next year.  So it could be another case of giving up Milledge for a rental.

Oswalt, though - that would be interesting.  What's his contract situation?

"He even tried to pimp it," Floyd said. "He's got no pimp." Said Wright: "I don't even know what that means."

Oswalt
I'm pretty sure he's a free agent after this season. Signed a two-year deal following the 2004 campaign.

SI
This is what SI.com says:  "Milledge was the only key name known to be connected to the Schmidt talks, while Brian Bannister is believed likely to be used to enhance a deal for Oswalt, who unlike the free agent-eligible Schmidt can't test the market until after the 2007 season."

Not that they can't be wrong.

Oswalt is a dick
But if you separate out his personality, I like him as a pitcher.  I don't know if I'll find it easy to root for him, at least right away.

Tough call.  I think if Oswalt can be less of a dick and if he and Floyd can put their little history behind them, go for it.  Another real arm might make this team unstoppable.

I had a dream last night
that the Mets "landed" Livan.

Does this mean I'm thinking about baseball too much?

I forget who they had to give up, but I thought it was a ripoff in my dream.

Hey hotspur
You a Tottenham fan or just a Shakespearian?

just a Shakespearian
Although now that the Sports Guy is a Spurs fan, I guess I'll have to jump on the bandwagon, heh.

Heh
It's funny, Bill Simmons chose to be a Spurs fan for a lot of the same reasons I did, including the bandwagon dynamic.  But I fear he's now created a bandwagon.

That's okay - Spurs fanhood is not the most rewarding pursuit.  The realities of it will cull the new fan herd a bit...

Does anyone
know where we can get clarification on Oswalt's status as it pertains to Free Agency?

by udamnwright on Jul 31, 2006 10:53 AM EDT reply actions

Just read at metsblog
That he's eligible for arbitration at the end of this season, and becomes a free agent at the end of the 2007 season.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
