Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

Has the NL ever had a greater chance recently?

To win the All-Star Game? Ozzie Guillen is managing and his crazy brand of nepotism gives the NL the best chance they have had in some time.

Star-divide

So here's how I see the gameplan from the AL, if Ozzie wasn't such a twit.

Starting pitcher would be Johan Santana. Let him pitch three innings or so. Then go to Liriano for three innings, then pass the ball to Ryan, Paps and Rivera, in no particular order.

But Ozzie Guillen says he is leaning towards starting Kenny Rogers. Kenny fricken Rogers.

And he has said he is thinkin about starting Kenny and letting him pitch for about 5 innings and then pass it on to his great closers.

Buh? And not use the best pitcher in the AL, if not all of baseball in Johan Santana?

I think Ozzie is officially crazy, and it would be nice if we could take advantage of that.

If you were Ozzie, what would you do with the pitching staff?

Making any starting pitcher
go more than a couple of innings at the AS game is irresponsible management, IMO. Looks like Santana is scheduled to pitch on Saturday before the AS break. I doubt the Twins would want him to pitch more than an inning. Same with Liriano, assuming he makes the roster via the Final Vote. And I doubt the Tigers want Rogers to pitch 5 innings. That's ridiculous. I take what Ozzie said about this with a grain of salt.

sour grapes
I would start Kazmir and see if he can go the distance.

Seriously, Ozzie is a dumbass who likes seeing his name in the papers. He's got a ton of options. And a bunch are from small-markets (Kaz, Halladay, Redman, Santana) who most of us never get to see. Why not show them off to the whole country?

A bunch of baseball blogs
have been running their lists of "25 least players" (of their team) for the last 25 years.  I have seen Kenny Rogers appear on 5 different lists.  I have seen him on a Twins site, a Mets site, a Skanks site, a Rangers site, an Oakland site (which was surprising as I remember his Oakland season his best season by far), and, I'm sure by the end of his current contract, a Tigers site!

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
