Open Thread - Game 113: Padres vs Mets (08/10/2006) on SNY
Not that I know what the hell I'm doing here (how do ya shift gears on this here blog machine?). But I notice there's no game thread yet. So maybe this can tide us over until somebody pays Eric's bail or whatever....
Also, I maybe have to fill some more space here, 'cause this diary's too short, so, um . . . Let's see if this works. [moved from diaries - anonymous. Also, go Mets!]
[editor's note, by kingcritical] Sorry guys, I forgot the game was early today and I'm swamped at work. Maybe I'll get the pitching matchup up there in a few. -kingcritical

Good job anonymous
(just joshin' ya, kc)
This lineup explains why we still haven't swept a home 3 game series this year. Fer reals.
If we win today, we're just a freakin' well-oiled machine.

and now we get to witness
By "good" you mean, of course...
"Craptastic" isn't good enough.
Really, we should just call it "four automatic outs in a row" and leave it at that.
One thing I like about this lineup
I know that sounded perverted but I promise I didn't mean it like that.

did anyone see Newsday
Yeah
by Billy Everyteen on Aug 10, 2006 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions
no, what did it say?
Wallace Matthews
The worries begin with the foolish and impulsive trade of Xavier Nady, a competent professional rightfielder, for a 41-year-old middle reliever and a young pitcher with a bum arm. That trade flew under the radar in light of the Yankees' acquisition of Bobby Abreu, and seemed justified to some because of the loss of Duaner Sanchez in a taxi accident.
But the impact of that deal won't be felt until October, when the games become real and the Mets, and their fans, realize Lastings Milledge is a fake.
The fans already know it, judging by their reaction to his outfield and plate misadventures Tuesday night against the Padres. It has become clear to the people in the stands that Milledge can't hit anything that is not a straight fastball and that his route to most fly balls is, to put it kindly, circuitous.
The other day, I asked Omar Minaya if he would feel comfortable with Milledge in the outfield at Fenway during the World Series. He looked at me for a moment and then laughed. "Not if he's in leftfield," he said.
He doesn't do much better in right, either.
ugh, thanks though
Yeah
And we did need the bullpen help, like it or not.
The whole thing makes me slighly anxious in terms of this season, but I don't see it as a bad trade. And the dig on Milledge is simply unfair.
by Billy Everyteen on Aug 10, 2006 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions
totally agree
the other side of it, though, is that
new regime
yeah, i totally appreciate that
No it's a good point
by Billy Everyteen on Aug 10, 2006 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions
The difference is that
stach-eriffic!!!!!
does he even watch the games?
"What about Aaron Heilman, a once-promising pitcher who now seems shaken by his manager's and GM's apparent lack of faith in him? Early in the season, when John Maine and Brian Bannister went down, we were told Heilman was too valuable in the bullpen to return to the starting rotation. In the ultimate show of disrespect, Jose Lima got a couple of starts before the Mets would even consider Heilman. Now, he rarely gets into a game at all, and when he does, he looks lost."
Meanwhile
Top o' the order. C'mon Metsies...

Ducksnorts
Hernandez is a perfect fit for this ballclub. He gets abused by lefties (.302/.365/.566), so the opposing manager stacks the lineup. Then, assuming Hernandez survives the first few innings, the Mets have four southpaws in their bullpen who can cause serious matchup problems late in the game. This is terrific roster management -- Hernandez' one weakness isn't as easy to exploit in his current environment as it might be elswhere; in other words, he has more value to the Mets than just about anyone else.

What do you think of Petco?
by Billy Everyteen on Aug 10, 2006 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions
It's a nice park
The location is perfect as I live downtown and walk to and from games. It's done wonders for the downtown restaraunt/bar/living scene.
They have created a new kind of fan, the group of twenty something girls/guys that go to the game as "pre-game" for a night out at the bars of downtown San Diego. Not great for knowledge of the game but some great eye candy!
That's apparently what happened in SF
Though of course the weather in San Diego is much more condusive to eye candy.
by Billy Everyteen on Aug 10, 2006 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions
And $5 to watch live major league baseball
Hell, it costs me five bucks for a piece of rubber chicken in the company cafeteria.
by Billy Everyteen on Aug 10, 2006 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions
It is a great deal
It is similar to what I heard from SF (never went to a game at old candlestick). Though, Yuppies in SoCal are a different breed, think less clothes for the women, less interesting to talk to, and less knowledge of the game.
New numbers...
Since it was requested upthread...
Thursday evening, August 10
Mets Magic Numbers (49 GL) (W vs. SD, 7-3)
Philadelphia 36 (49) (off)
Florida 33 (49) (at Wash. - in progress)
Atlanta 33 (49) (off)
Washington 31 (49) (vs. Fla. - in progress)
(If the Mets go 24-25 the rest of the way, the Phils would need to go 38-11 to tie. Life is good...)
