Open Thread - Game 113: Padres vs Mets (08/10/2006) on SNY

Not that I know what the hell I'm doing here (how do ya shift gears on this here blog machine?).  But I notice there's no game thread yet.  So maybe this can tide us over until somebody pays Eric's bail or whatever....

Also, I maybe have to fill some more space here, 'cause this diary's too short, so, um . . . Let's see if this works. [moved from diaries - anonymous. Also, go Mets!]

[editor's note, by kingcritical] Sorry guys, I forgot the game was early today and I'm swamped at work. Maybe I'll get the pitching matchup up there in a few. -kingcritical

So anyway
Mr. Met vs. Franken Friar:  who ya got??

Mr. Met's got nothing on Franken Friar's tongue action, I'll say that much.

Also, Go you Mets
Since it seemed to work last night.  First home sweep of the season?  I'm ready.

And one more thing
Any reason why the Padres leadoff hitter would be bunting with two strikes in the 1st AB of the game?

it's Dave Roberts
the hardball times or somebody did a study where they figured out that statistically, guys like Juan Pierre and Dave Roberts would actually be better if they bunted every time.

i hated bunting
when i played in HS and college (where I played club).  It always seemed like whenever I was up against some guy throwing ridiculously fast (which to me was anything 85 or up), I got the bunt sign from the coach.  thanks, skip.  I always thought I was going to break a finger

It's better than straining an oblique

I essentially did that this summer
I initially strained it playing badminton (whic, really, is bad enough).  But I aggravated it reaching down to pick up my beer.

I shit you not.

willie playing with house money today
having already won the series, our outfield is Ledee - Tucker - Endy, with our pal DeFelice behind the dish.  Senor Stache is hitting 5th.

In other words, let's go El Duque!

Good job anonymous
kingcritical really dropped the ball today.

(just joshin' ya, kc)

This lineup explains why we still haven't swept a home 3 game series this year.  Fer reals.

If we win today, we're just a freakin' well-oiled machine.

I'm almost glad Piazza didn't start
so that Josh Bard can share the humiliation.  The Mets are a very good base-stealing team this year, even without Mike's limp, soggy arm.

and now we get to witness
the awesome power of the 6-7-8-9 hitters: Tucker, Ledee, DiFelice, and El Duque.  This should be good.

How about "washed-uperrific"?  "Waiver-wire-credible"?  "Replacement-levelacious"?

Really, we should just call it "four automatic outs in a row" and leave it at that.

Frankly, he's been a disappointment for me. I think he is playing hurt though.

Earlier this year he was spectacular
Now he's hitting low average but at least he's dangerous enough with his power to protect Wright.

I think you're right he's playing hurt.  He's disappointing, but the potential's still there for him to be a big contributor.

he has disappointed a bit
but is hitting well enough so that no one is pitching around Beltran, which is a good thing.  He had a long slump and hopefully will finish the season strong.  It will be interesting to see what he can do in the playoffs.

HIs BA is a little disappointing
but overall, I can't complain.  He was great early in the season when the team was building its confidence.  If he had struggled early on as opposed to now, it might be different, but I'm not disappointed.

Wallace Matthews

The worries begin with the foolish and impulsive trade of Xavier Nady, a competent professional rightfielder, for a 41-year-old middle reliever and a young pitcher with a bum arm.

That trade flew under the radar in light of the Yankees' acquisition of Bobby Abreu, and seemed justified to some because of the loss of Duaner Sanchez in a taxi accident.

But the impact of that deal won't be felt until October, when the games become real and the Mets, and their fans, realize Lastings Milledge is a fake.

The fans already know it, judging by their reaction to his outfield and plate misadventures Tuesday night against the Padres. It has become clear to the people in the stands that Milledge can't hit anything that is not a straight fastball and that his route to most fly balls is, to put it kindly, circuitous.

The other day, I asked Omar Minaya if he would feel comfortable with Milledge in the outfield at Fenway during the World Series. He looked at me for a moment and then laughed. "Not if he's in leftfield," he said.

He doesn't do much better in right, either.

ugh, thanks though
the only part I agreed with was the characterization of Nady.  a regrettable but necessary move, in my opinion, that could still work out quite well for the mets depending on how Perez does.  nady's ceiling did not appear to be very high

Yeah
I get feeling a bit uneasy about missing Nady's power - and even his average - in this postseason.  He's a more reliable player right now than Milledge.  But he was playing pretty much at his ceiling, whereas Milledge - and possibly Perez - could end up doing so much more.

And we did need the bullpen help, like it or not.

The whole thing makes me slighly anxious in terms of this season, but I don't see it as a bad trade.  And the dig on Milledge is simply unfair.

the other side of it, though, is that
only the Mets trade AWAY guys like Jason Bay and (dare I mention his name) Kazmir when they're 6 games OUT of the wild card, but made this move, trading away their starting rightfielder "for the future" when they are 14 games UP in the division.  It does seem a bit backward.

does he even watch the games?
Heilman is the set up man, and in my opinion has been overused.

"What about Aaron Heilman, a once-promising pitcher who now seems shaken by his manager's and GM's apparent lack of faith in him? Early in the season, when John Maine and Brian Bannister went down, we were told Heilman was too valuable in the bullpen to return to the starting rotation. In the ultimate show of disrespect, Jose Lima got a couple of starts before the Mets would even consider Heilman. Now, he rarely gets into a game at all, and when he does, he looks lost."

Ducksnorts
Made a great point about Hernandez and the Mets:
Hernandez is a perfect fit for this ballclub. He gets abused by lefties (.302/.365/.566), so the opposing manager stacks the lineup. Then, assuming Hernandez survives the first few innings, the Mets have four southpaws in their bullpen who can cause serious matchup problems late in the game. This is terrific roster management -- Hernandez' one weakness isn't as easy to exploit in his current environment as it might be elswhere; in other words, he has more value to the Mets than just about anyone else.

It's a nice park
I honestly think they went a bit too big. The fans don't care enough about the Pads for it to constantly sell out which leaves a lot of open seats in the upper sections. It has great site lines and that bar in the old building is great. I'll often pay $5 just to get in walk around and watch the game from the terrace of the bar.

The location is perfect as I live downtown and walk to and from games. It's done wonders for the downtown restaraunt/bar/living scene.

They have created a new kind of fan, the group of twenty something girls/guys that go to the game as "pre-game" for a night out at the bars of downtown San Diego.  Not great for knowledge of the game but some great eye candy!

It is a great deal
I have been thinking they are going to jack up the price of the park pass but they haven't.  It's a great bar too, lots of beer on tap and full bar and the view from that terrace is great. the only problem is they only let you stay on the terrace for half the game.

It is similar to what I heard from SF (never went to a game at old candlestick). Though, Yuppies in SoCal are a different breed, think less clothes for the women, less interesting to talk to, and less knowledge of the game.

Gonna be away for a few days; in the D.C. area over the weekend and guess who happens to be in town? Plan on taking my kids to their first Mets' game ever, and it's going to be in Washington. Should be cool. Catch y'all in about a week.

Since it was requested upthread...

Thursday evening, August 10
Mets Magic Numbers (49 GL) (W vs. SD, 7-3)
Philadelphia     36 (49) (off)
Florida             33 (49) (at Wash. - in progress)
Atlanta            33 (49) (off)
Washington      31 (49) (vs. Fla. - in progress)
