SNY's David Lee

Ok, we are well in to SNY's inagural season and for the most part I have been pretty happy with the channel.

Star-divide

There are things that irk me, like when they lead with Yankees coverage, but nothing irks me more than that hack David Lee.  Watching him do the Sports New York highlight show is like watching Zambrano pitch.  Utterly maddening, and you know that guy has no clue what he's doing.

How can we hire a chump like this and put him on the air?  I feel like just about anybody could have gotten that job, you just had to show up.  Does anyone else feel this way?  I've watched him butcher highlights enough that I had to say something about it.  He flat-out sucks!

Maybe you're not getting enough of it.  Just kidding.

Anyway, Lee sucks, but all I really need to know (scores) I get from the crawl at the bottom of the screen.  And I like that it's just scores, unlike ESPN--I couldn't care less who was 2-3 with an RBI in the Baltimore-Kansas City game.  And as bad as the SNY "talent" is, anything's an improvement on the broadcasting horror known as Fran Healy, and you're right to point out that SNY is more objective than YES.  Then again, so is Al Jazeera.

What irks me about SNY
I hate HATE interviews with anyone during a Mets game. The other night when they interviewed Guy Conti when Pedro was pitching, sheesh, that went on FOREVER. They had 3 in-game interviews during that game, with Conti, the kid (he was cute, but still...) and then some guy (sports memorabilia seller?) that Chris Cotter wasn't even really paying attention to and trying to hurry up.

I also don't see that Chris Cotter adds anything.

I have a mind to write to SNY about the whole in-game interview thing. Even one is too much, but three? Give me a break. I want to see the game. I couldn't care less what anyone has to say (even Pedro) until after the game.

Other than that, I like Gary, Keith, Ron, and Ralph when he visits. On the air, they are too impressed with Trachsel's number of wins, but hopefully privately they know he's pretty average.

As for David Lee, yeah, I agree, he sucks, but he doesn't make me want to puke as often as Michael Kay.

Agree 100%
And I especially hate the camera work during interviews.  If you want to have voices while we're watching the action, that's one thing, but I have no need to look at Jerry Manuel's face while the on-field action is reduced to a box 1/4 the size of my screen - nor do I want to be subjected to the constant jumping back and forth, where you end up missing the whole rhythm of the at-bat.

Gary, Keith, and Ron are great, really.  And I love that SNY exists at all.  But, along with the constant PSAs (Smoking Is Bad), they need to ditch the distracting interviews.

"He even tried to pimp it," Floyd said. "He's got no pimp." Said Wright: "I don't even know what that means."

You wanna talk about in=game interviews?
How about Fox missing David Wright's homer in the All-Star game because they were busy interviewing the pitcher who had just been yanked from the game?

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
