Magic Numbers Are People, Too

Let's be real, people, the Mets don't win the NL East every day, so we need to have some good fun with it.  Reading Mr. Met's post today I got an idea - magic numbers are our heroes.  Today, with a magic number at 17, the Mets are Keith Hernandez away.

So here's my human countdown - with current Mets getting preference over history - below the fold.

Star-divide

16 - Duke
15 - CarlosB
14 - Gil Hodges
13 - Wags
12 - Ron Darling
11 - Hippo
10 - ND
9 - Tood Hundley
8 - Gary Carter
7 - Professor Reyes
6 - Mike DiFelice
5 - Baseball Jesus
4 - Woody
3 - Rafael Santana
2 - Marv Throneberry
1 - Mookie Wilson
00 - Mr. Met!

(And...looking at the Phils 4-0 lead tonight, the Mets are gonna be at Duke tomorrow.)

Let me know what you think.

10 should be
Endy Chavez, he deserves it this year.
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win

Oh, he is there.
ND (Endy) is shorthand.  I don't know a good one for DeFelice.

n
i mighta gone with anyone over DeFelice (even tho he's current).  Timo, because who doesn't love Timo? Mora, because man that trade sucked.  Or Wally B, because that's straight outta my youth.

DeFelice?  he's a rental.

Yeah, but I need to have rules!
I wanted to include Melvin.  He's awesome.  But MikeD is on the team, so he's got to be on the list.

forget the rules and the current team
16 is Gooden. The magic number is Doctor K.

I second that

I agree
with the sentiment expressed by others here.  We should mix and match the 2006 players with 1986 players.  So instead of DiFelice, Woodward, and LoDuca, how about Backman, Dykstra, and Doc?

Isn't is great to have the best record in baseball and a magic number of 16?  Instead of debating various holes in the team, like other fans do, we debate how to label the magic number!  Woo Hoo!

Right on
let's use our all-time numbers.  Starting with the Doc.
"He even tried to pimp it," Floyd said. "He's got no pimp." Said Wright: "I don't even know what that means."

Wayne Garrett was 11 wasn't he?
I know I could google it, but we're supposed to be experts on here.

I'm not a stickler, even for my own rules.
This has a mix of 69, 86 and current players.

16 - Doc
15 - CarlosB
14 - Gil Hodges
13 - Wags (Lee Mazilli?)
12 - Ron Darling
11 - Tim Teufel
10 - Duffy Dyer
9 - J.C. Martin
8 - Gary Carter
7 - Professor Reyes
6 - Wally Backman
5 - Baseball Jesus
4 - Nails
3 - Rafael Santana
2 - Marv Throneberry
1 - Mookie Wilson
00 - Mr. Met!

Nice list.
I lean towards using the best player of that number, with a lean to historical names (thus Darling over Willie, for example).  I'd definitely put Buddy H. over Santana.

So would I, but...
...Raffy is a reminder of the old days of baseball.  A time when you could win the World Series with a poor offensive short-stop.

but....
The Yankees did that four times!

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

one last thing
With all that Endy has done for this team, maybe he should get the 10 slot over Duffy Dyer.

And now I'll stop being a backseat diarist.

Backseat, schmack-seat
No worries.  I thought the list might spark some good chatter.  After all, it's not every day the Mets are one "Doc" Gooden away from taking the NL East from the damn Braves!

Endy should have stayed, but this list needed a 'Duffy' on it.

I'm mostly kicking myself that I didn't think of this when the Magic number was either Nolan Ryan or Cliff Floyd.  Now THAT would be a good conversation.

Soon, very soon, the magic number will be 10,
and for me, we'll then be an Endy away from clinching. So, I must politely scoff at the rules, Ian.

by Max in NJ on Sep 6, 2006 4:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Scoff if you must...
...but they won't be at Endy or Duffy long.  They'll be at JC Martin sooner than you think!

So after we clinch...
We can declare it Mr. Met day?  Mr. Met = 00

no, I think
it's still Marvelous Marv at the moment.  The Phils play another game tomorrow, though, so it would easily be possible for us to hit the Mook before the next Mets game.

You are correct, sir.

...on Derek Jeter!
