Around SBN: Explaining the Mets' bullpen struggles Bar-right-arrows

Bye Bye, Norfolk

Beginning in 2007, the Mets' top minor league affiliate (AAA) will be the New Orleans Zephyrs, terminating their relationship with the Norfolk Tides, a pact that began back in 1969. A big motive for the move was the fact that the Zephyrs are in the Pacific Coast League, which is comprised of mostly warm-weather affiliates (Norfolk is in the International League, whose teams play in somewhat cooler climates).

The Mets have also pledged to contribute to the rebuilding effort in New Orleans, a sign that they intend to be members of the community and not just passive occupants.

I don't think this is that bad a move
It does mean that there's longer flights in store for Heath Bell.

Fortunately, we got David Wright's loyalty before we left.

We'll see what the big easy can generate. And I hope the team lifts some spirits there.

I bet the Tides players disagree.
Not only is it a much further trip to Shea for call-ups (which can hurt for those emergency call-ups once or twice a year), moving to the PCL probably means a lot more travel distance for road games.  Also, a quick glance at the Z's website indicates that they play in an outdoor stadium.  Ever been to NO in July or August?  Godawful heat and humidity.  A few insects, too...

Trip
The article I linked to mentions it, but the move might actually reduce the travel time for players being called up to the Mets, since they would be much closer to the airport in a metropolis like New Orleans versus the more rural Norfolk.

THE NEW FACE OF THE METS...ENTHUSIASM!!

I don't have too much to add gang. I think the picture speaks for itself. I'm not too much of a stats geek, I just go off of what I see from the players and the Win / Loss column. This pic was taken from Thursday's phenomenal game against the hated Phillies! I can't remember the last time David Wright got this excited about scoring a run or making a play. It really feels good to see the entire team enjoying a win. The team desperately needed this. I NEEDED THIS from David Wright. It just gives me goose bumps.
