Top Ten Reasons For Being a Mets fan

Here's a piece I wrote for the radio I work at:

  1. With the Mets out of the playoffs, we can put all our concentration on the hockey season, which recently played its first games on American!
  2. The Mets are the franchise that brought you the sports clichés such as "you gotta believe" and "it aint over til its over." Karma is on our side.
  3. The Mets have three outfielders in their farm system that have been called future all-stars (Lastings Millege, Carlos Gomez, and Fernando Martinez). Chances are that one will meet his potential (or be traded for a pitcher).
  4. "Meet the Mets" is probably the greatest theme song in all of sports. It can convert even the biggest Yankee fan to a Mets maven.
  5. Without Shawn Green or Tom Glavine, a lot of money has been freed up to spend on quality players not eligible for AARP.
  6. Mr. Met is still the best mascot in baseball. And of course, when there is Mr. Met, his foxy wife Mrs. Met has to be near.
  7. In 2009 a new stadium will open, replacing the dump currently known as Shea Stadium.
  8. When worse comes to worse, at least we are not Cubs fans.
  9. David Wright could have been MVP if the Mets made it to the playoffs and Jose Reyes has all the potential in the world despite a poor second half. Oh yeah, both are years from reaching their prime and are a great core for success.
And the number one reason for being a Mets fan next year: Armando Benitez is nowhere to be found amidst the Shea Stadium bullpen.

"As for 1966--oy. Chilcott was a catcher who never reached the majors. The number two pick was held by the Kansas City A's. They picked Reggie Jackson"

Shea is a dump
I don't care.  I love the place.  I always will, long after it's gone.

Nice list, BTW.

My friend and I
We might be taking our senior trip next year to Shea (and subsequently Yankee Stadium for shits and giggles. Now THAT place is where you overpay for seats that look nice on a chart but have a terrible view.)

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
