Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

2007 SBN Baseball Awards: NL MVP

Every year, SBN conducts an internal vote among our baseball bloggers to determine the results of MLB's annual awards. Our votes don't really count, but it's a neat exercise to see if we can do a better job of picking the winners than the real voters whose actual votes we deride for being shoddy and misinformed.

I was only given a vote for the National League awards, but I will include the results of both leagues here over the coming days.

Rookies of the Year
Managers of the Year
Cy Youngs

My Ballot

  1. Hanley Ramirez
  2. David Wright
  3. Chipper Jones
  4. Matt Holliday
  5. Albert Pujols
  6. Miguel Cabrera
  7. Prince Fielder
  8. Chase Utley
  9. Jimmy Rollins
  10. Barry Bonds
Clearly, I watched a different baseball season than my SBN compatriots. I don't really have anything new to say about this, and everyone's reasons for voting as they did were hashed out on the SBN internal mailing list. Suffice it to say there are differences of opinion as to how to judge the "value" of a player, and a lot of people still insist on marrying the overall performance of a team to the individual accomplishments of a single player.

Your thoughts?

My personal opinion is that
The MVP is for the best player in the league. Not the best player among the teams that did good.I do believe that Fielder belongs up there. Holliday not so much... his numbers are from a hitters ball park. And from What ive heard from others, he can't field. That should nullify his stats. Almost the same could be said for rollins, though I admit bias could come in conciously or unconciously in that decision. Fielder first, Wright second. Though I wouldnt mind david winning MVP
"As for 1966--oy. Chilcott was a catcher who never reached the majors. The number two pick was held by the Kansas City A's. They picked Reggie Jackson"

MVP
Means "Most Valuable Player", not "Most Valuable Player from a contender".  That being said, the guy I think deserves the NL MVP was on a contender.
  1. David Wright
  2. Hanley Ramirez
  3. Chipper Jones
  4. Prince Fielder
  5. Chase Utley
  6. Albert Pujols
  7. Miguel Cabrera
  8. Matt Holliday
  9. Jimmy Rollins
  10. Barry Bonds
That's not Mets bias (OK, maybe a little).  I genuinely believe David was the best player in the league in 2007.
Keep A-Rod in New York! Bring him to Queens!!!

Yeah...
...not Holliday.  My MVP is Wright, but he's not going to win.  With writers who think that Derek Jeter is the best player in baseball, it'll be no surprise to see Holliday or Rollins win.  Great players to be sure, but the MVP for me is either Wright or Fielder.

holliday's splits
Home OPS: 1.157
Away: .860

not to mention a 75 point drop in batting average. 75 points.

wright's OPS was over 1.000 at home and a little over .900 on the road. he HAS to be the mvp. best hitter on the team; pretty good defense; was 34/39 (87%!) stealing bases

fielder's OPS+ was only 6 points higher and the only thing he does better than wright is hit home runs.

Hanley's D
Even without the contender argument, I don't think Hanley Ramirez should really be an MVP candidate.  He was probably the worst defensive SS in baseball this year, and it's not really even close.  SS is just too important a position to have a black hole at, I can't imagine he didn't severely hurt his team defensively.  Just for one metric, John Dewan put him at a -37 for the year (37 less plays made then the average SS).  The 3rd worst SS was at -19.

Thanks for getting rid of the best player from bes
t team concept, and thanks even more for putting Barry Bonds on this list.

I mean... his OPS+ was 170. He's clearly not the MOST valuable because he missed over 30 games, but definitely deserves some votes.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
