Crazy Absurd Funkdiculous Santana Rumor

Per MLB Trade Rumors:

Just got an incredible rumor from a trusted New York sportswriter.  Stay with me, because this one's crazy.  But rest assured that if the source wasn't good, I wouldn't post it.

Minnesota has initiated talks for a three-way blockbuster with the Twins and A's.  Here's how it would go down:

Mets send Jose Reyes, Kevin Mulvey, and Hector Pellot to A's
A's send Bobby Crosby and Dan Johnson to Mets
A's send Dan Haren to Twins
Twins send Johan Santana to Mets

Mets get Johan Santana, Bobby Crosby and Dan Johnson
A's get Jose Reyes and Kevin Mulvey
Twins get Dan Haren and Hector Pellot

I'm not even sure where to begin.

i'd go as far as to say
it's intriguing on paper and we very much would love to have Santana, then Bedard, then Haren, but NOT if it gives up reyes, wright or beltran.  3 years of reyes is not equal to 1 year of santana.

i bet santana goes no where.  an equal trade will be put together by someone, then that team will ahve a couple days to santana to an extension.  santana will then have all the leverage in the world and the team will not agree, then santana will pitch one more year and be a fa anyway.

not going to get worked up (anymore than i already am) until i see where this is coming from and where its going.

Santana? Never liked his music
I suspect the Angels are about to make a major play for Santana, having lost the bidding on Miguel Cabrera and having the prospects to make an attractive deal for him.

This proposal is not a good deal for the Mets as far as I can see.  And I don't know what kind of "good" source would make shit like this up, since it looks like one of the more obviously substance-abuse-fueled imaginary deals I've seen in a while.

Hard to believe
twins would only get Dan haren and Hector pellot for Santana.

No way this happens

by sincethebeginning @ Amazin' Avenue on Dec 5, 2007 5:22 PM EST reply actions

Not really
Pellot is a throw-in. Haren was almost as good as Santana last year, he is younger and is under contract for three more years at very reasonable money. That works out pretty well for the Twins, considering Santana will be a free agent after 2008 and figures to make much more money after that.

Twins don't need that
They have a load of good pitchers coming up soon-ish. They need a shortstop or centerfielder... of which they're getting none.

We could send Reyes to the A's and Beltran to the Twins and end up with both!

Soon-ish?
It seemed clear to me from the trade packages being bandied about by the Red Sox and Yankee camps that the Twins want a big league-ready pitcher. They have already dealt away Matt Garza and lost Carlos Silva to free agency. If they trade away Santana to boot they are going to need pitching.

by Eric Simon on Dec 5, 2007 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

I probably wouldn't make this trade
but why is Jose Reyes untouchable. Is he the kind of guy you build a team around. I will discount his miserable last 3rd of a season even though he fell apart at crunch time, but who elected him into HOF already. If you're talking about attitude his was worse than Milledge's ever was for parts of last year.

he still a stellar defensive SS
a year removed from a 115 OPS+ season, along with all his basestealing ability. He's also still only 24. He's still untouchable IMO, even Santana

I agree with Eli
Reyes is a fine player, but we're talking about the best pitcher in baseball.  Assuming the Mets can sign Santana to an extension, you make any deal in which Reyes is the centerpiece.

Wright is, IMHO, the only Mets untouchable (Beltran is a moot point because of his salary).  I honestly would not trade Wright straight-up for any player in the game.

the best pitcher
who will be over 30 very soon and with those mechanics there's no way he holds up when he's older. great position player > great pitcher.

age
In an age when pitchers with the desire to pitch well into their 40s can because of medicine and technology? I can't imagine how long they'll be able to pitch in 10 years. And it's not like Santana relies on his velocity...

NY Post Online: 3-Way Deal a Total Fabrication
Omar Minaya reiterated that Reyes is not being traded, which instantly doomed the idea. So did the fact that Minaya and Oakland GM Billy Beane have exchanged phone messages and e-mails, but have not talked at these meetings as of early tonight.
But for the final word, we offer this gem from Beane: "I rarely comment on trades publicly, but let me comment on this one: It is an absolute, total fabrication."

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
