Opening Day Roster Set

The Mets will play their final spring training game this afternoon against the Devil Rays at Tropicana Field before flying to St. Louis to begin the regular season tomorrow night. After much hemming and hawing, the active roster is finally set.

Starting Pitchers

Billy Wagner, LHP
Aaron Heilman, RHP
Pedro Feliciano, LHP
Joe Smith, RHP
Scott Shoeneweis, LHP
Ambiorix Burgos, RHP
Aaron Sele, RHP

Bench

Endy Chavez, OF
Julio Franco, 1B
Ramon Castro, C
Damion Easley, IF
David Newhan, OF
Lastings Milledge, OF

Burgos and Milledge were somewhat surprise additions to the big club, while Chan Ho Park was one of the last demotions to Triple-A New Orleans.

Opening Day Roster

I am very glad to see Lastings make the roster. He has the ability to help the Mets for avery long time. Also, It seems you didn't note that Julio Franco is indeed on the roster and that Mike Pelfrey will stay in extended spring training and not be on the roster until his turn in the rotation comes up.

Probably

The Mets wanted to carry an extra relief pitcher in the early going so Pelfrey would have just sat on the bench. Once we hit mid-April I think Burgos is a good candidate for demotion, unless he happens to be dominating the league at that point.

unless he claims the starting job won't he go down so he doesn't have to platoon or sit on the bench?

Hmm.

It depends if they are going to carry 12 or 13 pitchers. 13 seems like a lot, but considering the question marks in the starting rotation it might be the way to go.
