I'm back!! I'll have some thoughts later on regarding the Mets whitewashing at the hands of the Phillies, the amateur draft, and more.

Guillen takes the embarrassing punch out.
Yeah, boiiieeee.
Watch me paste this pathetic palooka with a powerful paralyzing perfect pachydermous percussion pitch.

Jorge!!!
Has he been great or what?!...Now, let's get him some more runs. This is getting ridiculous.

CARLOS!!!
Just what I had in mind...although we're eventually going to have to stop relying on solo blasts.

Going to have to get used to the DH
I keep wondering when Sosa's going to have to hit...of course, I'd probably rather have Sosa hit than Ricky Ledee.

Unbelievable
Sosa took 5 pitches to get through the bottom of the 7th, and Durbin took 4 to get through the top of the 8th.

Rally time
Pile it on, baby. We keep this up, we might score four!

So.
Great, great outing by Sosa, who managed to take advantage of the Tigers' free-swinging tendencies without getting burned by their power.  Not-so-great night for the Mets' hitters, who swung at way too many first pitches and allowed a guy they should've been shelling to take them into the 9th.

That sounds right

Let's go, Billy
You're going to hold the lead this time, right?

put it in the books.
This one feels good, despite the Mets' collective slump continuing.  Nice to get a win, and a shutout, whether or not the bats are ready for real competition.  But I don't like the Mets' chances against a real frontline starter at this rate.

I just figure
It's got to end before long. Offense comes and goes, as we all know. Pitching is where you want consistency, and for the most part the Mets have had that, even during the slump. I'm not too worried.

Starting pitching, that is
Bullpen is a different story.

great win
who woulda thunk that Jorge Sosa would be there best pitcher. Great pitching performance against a real good offensive team.

Whoda thunk
Jorge Sosa would be such good medicine for the Mets?

Back on track
Sosa becomes the first pitcher ever to win 6 of his first 7 starts as a Met, D-Dub and Carlos D both knock solo jacks, and Billy the Kid exorcises his internal demons with a dominant 9th. All right!!!

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
