Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Open Thread - Game 108: Mets vs. Brewers (08/02/2007) on SNY

Source: mlb.com

Tale of the tape:

Lawrence (AAA) Capuano
ERA 3.87 4.70
FIP 3.25 4.09
K/9 5.92 7.66
BB/9 1.03 3.66
K/BB 5.78 2.10
HR/9 0.68 0.87
WHIP 1.15 1.44
GB/FB 0.94 1.23
BABIP .308 .323
eBABIP --- .309

Que se dillio:

Pedro was supposed to throw 45 pitches in an intra-squad in PSL this morning. Capuano was not scheduled to appear in this series, but after Dave Bush came in as a reliever on Tuesday Ned Yost didn't have much of a choice. I'm actually excited to see Lawrence up here. I've always been impressed with his walk rate, and his K/BB this year in New Orleans is gaudy. He has historically been a groundball pitcher, though that hasn't been the case in Triple-A. Still, he has kept the ball in the park, which limits the worst case scenario of any flyball.

The other side of the tracks:

Backup Catcher?
With DiFelice in the minors and LoDuca injured, who is the Mets' backup catcher today?

by ams258 on Aug 2, 2007 2:04 PM EDT reply actions

Nevermind
Howie Rose said LoDuca is about ready.

Also, Pedro apparently threw 67 pitches in a simulated game today, and his numbers sound decent.  I think 50 strikes, no walks, 1 hit batter, 2 runs, 1 earned, 5 1/3 IP.

by ams258 on Aug 2, 2007 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

wow
In the early going the middle of the Mets order is really looking like what a middle of the order should look like.  Wright, Delg, and Moistest come through.

It is still early and the Brew Crew are formidable opponents, but I'm still concerned that he is at 40+ pitches already and couldn't get through the bottom of their order.

So Can someone fill me in
Since being absent for around 2 weeks? I've been starved for any kind of mets info outside of sportscenter.

Wheres Joe Schmoe smith?
Why is Sosa in the bullpen?
Whats the status on Beltran, Gomez and Duke man?

by NewMet5 on Aug 2, 2007 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Update
Joe Smith in AAA. He was struggling and tired, they basically have shut him down.

Sosa he blew in last few starts. Hence the pen, he pitched well in Tuesday game.

Beltran tore his oblique swinging in batting practice. Out for 2-3 weeks on the DL.

Gomez broken wrist bone out 6-8 weeks.

Duke is day to day with a hammy strain.

its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win!!!

answers
Joe Smith is in New Orleans.

Sosa mucked up his last six or so starts.

Beltran hurt his oblique and I think he's on the DL.  I don't think it's real serious.

Gomez, I don't know.

Lo Duca hurt his hamstring but should be back shortly.

With Gomez I mean that I wasn't sure when he is coming back.  I was assuming you know that he was hurt.

Yeah
I did. Thanks you two. Its a shame that everytime we seem to go back to full force, something else happens. At least some good stuff has happened... But what are all your opinions on Castillo? I remember watching it wiz by on the little info line on Sports Center i was like; "Woa woa woa, that can't be true... Omar said he was exclusively looking for bullpen and pitching help" but oh well. And also, what do you guys think that the braves and phillies moves will influence our chances of winning ze division?

by NewMet5 on Aug 2, 2007 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not a fan
I think Gotay should be playing. His defense is not outweighting his hitting, if you want he could be switched out for defense late in games with Easley or even AHern. Castillo is barely more productive with the stick than Valentin was and apparently can't hit a decent fly ball to boot.

by DoctorK16 on Aug 2, 2007 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

not my favorite move
I'd rather see Gotay out there--I figure his defense might improve with more playing time.  And I really like his approach at the plate.   Unlike Willie, I like to see the youngsters be given a shot until they prove that they are not up to the task.

The silver lining in the deal is that if Castillo walks at the end of the season, the Mets will get a draft pick.  I really hope they don't re-sign him.

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

by kingcritical on Aug 2, 2007 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

How
Do the mets get the draft pick? I remember hearing that the mets gave up a pick to get alou, but I don't understand how the whole system works. And yes, I hope to be seeing Beltran,Milledge, and Gomez in the OF, with Wright, Reyes, Gotay and Carlos D on the infield. Think Duke will come back for another Run?

And Yay D-Dub!

by NewMet5 on Aug 2, 2007 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

when a free agent leaves a team
the team that signs him must give a compensatory pick to the team he leaves.  I don't know all of the rules here, but I think this pick would come in the "sandwich" round between rounds 1 and 2.

And I think this is Lo Duca's last season as a Met.  I really wish he was playing more like he did last year.  I don't know what they will do for a starting catcher next year.

by kingcritical on Aug 2, 2007 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

free agent picks
All free agents are filed in to type A,B,C type based on Elias rankings by position. Assuming a team offers a player arbitration, if that player signs with another team. Type A free agents get the other teams first round pick and a sandwich pick, a pick between the 1 and 2 rounds. Type B guys get the Sandwich pick. Type C guys you get nothing.

I like Gotay as well,
but I can see why Minaya made this move.

If Castillo and Reyes can get on base, let's hope the big guns start mashing.

As long as Minaya doesn't resign him, I'm cool with this trade.

With Utley on the DL
And considering Beltran is on the DL for us and with all of the struggles/injuries we have had... if DWright gets hot, does he have an outside shot at the MVP if we hold onto the division?

Castro could start
But maybe not play everyday.  I think he would get run down.

With that said, I think Castro's emergence allows Minaya to focus his energies elsewhere.

He should be looking for a stud pitcher, and a power bat on the corner.  Put Milledge in RF, Gotay at 2nd, Castro behind the dish, and away we go.

And according to you guys with rules
That means that if Green, Alou (Doubt it), And Duke get signed by other teams, we get draft picks?

by NewMet5 on Aug 2, 2007 3:40 PM EDT reply actions

Pick
Probably, One caveat. The when it comes to first rounders and a team signs multiple type A, the team with the worse record gets the pick. So I it might be hard to get 2 picks. All those guys you named I believe are considered type A FA's. Castillo was a B last year.

2013 ALL-STAR GAME(TM) LOGO CONTEST

Major League Baseball has formally announced that Citi Field will be the site of the 2013 All-Star Game. (see video) In light of this, I have decided to launch an All-Star Game logo contest. To help get you started, I provided all of you with a sample All-Star Game logo. (click here to embiggen) If you wish to participate, please enter your submission with an image below, in the comments section. The contest ends on May 31st. I will choose a select number of finalists, and the community will vote on which of those logos is the best one.

Can you create a better logo than the sample logo provided? Then, give it a shot. Good luck to all participants!
Jon Rauch is awesome. Dan Tanna is, obviously, a fan of Greg Pomes.
LET'S GO METS GIF

By the way, I need some help here - is there any way to make this gif go faster? The "Let's" and "Go" sequences are only supposed to be 500 milliseconds each, and "Mets" a full second. Instead, each sequence is at least a full 1000 milliseconds (1 second) longer than it should be.
The first picture of a not devastated Tom Glavine after Game 162 of 2007 has finally been released.

(This is an old and kind of out of left field reference, but hey, we're playing the Marlins right now and John Maine just got released, so it's sort of relevant, plus I spent approximately 6.5 minutes making it and felt like I had to share.)
