Our Pitching Sucks

I'm of the opinion that, even though we've been playing awful baseball, we'll manage to turn things around and hang on to the division.

Star-divide

But even if we do, and we make the playoffs, how far is our shit pitching going to take us?  Even in the weak NL, and how the Cards somehow won it all last year with piss-poor pitching during the regular season, do you really expect our staff to hold up in the playoffs?  We can't even hold a lead against the friggin' Nats!!!!

All I know is Mota better not even sniff the post-season roster, and neither should Sele.  How about getting some of the call-ups into the games to see if we've got anything there?  I've been a big supporter of Willie throughout...but I'm really starting to question his handling of the pitching staff.  Why is Mota still getting chances to single-handedly lose games for us?

I don't know what the solution is, but even if we make the playoffs, our pitching will prevent us from winning a title.

the youngsters will not get a chance
Neither now, nor in the playoffs.  Sounds like they won't be on the roster if the Mets make the playoffs.

We talked about this a couple of times in Monday's game thread.  Comments are here and here.

I don't know what the hell is the matter with Willie.  The whole situation is pathetic.

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

Not just Willie
Omar too. He's gotta take some heat.
As for fan perception that Randolph is the one choosing to go with a six-man rotation and to use Brian Lawrence in a pennant race, team insiders suggest he's getting a raw deal - that those moves aren't really his call. Still, GM Omar Minaya insisted: "Willie's the manager. He makes those decisions. He gets input from Rick (Peterson). He gets input form the minor-league people. He's not dictated, `You have to pitch this guy.' They're talked through, and that's how it is."

I blame
Omar for any problems our bullpen has now. Willie has crap to deal with, so it is not entirely his fault. But if I recall correctly, have any of our bullpen call ups, i.e Collazo, humber, pelfrey or smith have been particulary untouchable. 99% chance we're not gonna luck out like the yankees have, getting gold from minor leaguers. It's what we got boys, and I'm hoping it'll change before spring of next year.
"As for 1966--oy. Chilcott was a catcher who never reached the majors. The number two pick was held by the Kansas City A's. They picked Reggie Jackson"

what?
Philip Humber has appeared in all of two games (Sept. 5 and Sept. 11) in the majors this year, pitching a total of 3 innings.  Just in what's passed of September so far, Mota has made 9 appearances, Schoeneweis 6, and even Sele 3.  How can you claim that Humber has performed poorly, or that Randolph's completely fucking crazy approach to bullpen utilization isn't at least partly to blame here?

circular reasoning
From the NY Post:
Wondering why Brian Lawrence started Monday instead of Philip Humber? "[Humber] got consideration, but the fact is that he had not pitched in a while," Minaya said.

We talked about this a little on Monday, but the point bears repeating: this is complete and total crap.  You can't refuse to use a pitcher and then claim you're not using him because he hasn't been used enough.  And, to repeat a quote from here:

"Sure, I would do that,'' Pelfrey said about the pen. "But, It's not up to me.''

It's up to Randolph, who says "no'' about experimenting.

"There's not enough time to do that,'' Randolph said. "We have guys who are capable of doing that, and they have to step up.''

Humber was bypassed Monday night in favor of Brian Lawrence to start against the Washington Nationals and will be getting periodic relief innings the rest of the season.

But not enough for the playoffs to be an option.

"You don't take a young guy like that who's never done it and force-feed him,'' Randolph said.

Is he fucking serious?  The Mets have pissed away their entire division lead waiting for these putative "guys who are capable of doing that" to "step up"?  Doesn't that seem like a good sign that these guys might not actually be "capable of doing that," considering that "that" in this case means "preventing the Mets from losing crucial games"?

Francisco Rodriguez
Remember him, Willie?  He's this guy who had 5 fucking major league innings under his belt when the Angels made him the most critical component of their bullpen for the 2002 postseason.  Remember what happened?  No, Willie, he did not choke when faced with the Yankees' Aura and Mystique.  The Angels WON THE FUCKING WORLD SERIES FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FRANCHISE HISTORY!!!!!!

Rodriguez 2002 postseason line: 18.2 IP, 10 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 28 K

Good thing the Angels didn't "force-feed" him!

Fire Willie Randolph!

Joba. Joba. Joba. Joba. Joba.
Chamberlain had three, count 'em, three bullpen sessions in the minor leagues. He seems to have made the adjustment just fine.

If the Mets miss the playoffs,
After Willie's "we'll be sipping champagne" talk, I would support his firing!
