Our Pitching Sucks
I'm of the opinion that, even though we've been playing awful baseball, we'll manage to turn things around and hang on to the division.
But even if we do, and we make the playoffs, how far is our shit pitching going to take us? Even in the weak NL, and how the Cards somehow won it all last year with piss-poor pitching during the regular season, do you really expect our staff to hold up in the playoffs? We can't even hold a lead against the friggin' Nats!!!!
All I know is Mota better not even sniff the post-season roster, and neither should Sele. How about getting some of the call-ups into the games to see if we've got anything there? I've been a big supporter of Willie throughout...but I'm really starting to question his handling of the pitching staff. Why is Mota still getting chances to single-handedly lose games for us?
I don't know what the solution is, but even if we make the playoffs, our pitching will prevent us from winning a title.

the youngsters will not get a chance
We talked about this a couple of times in Monday's game thread. Comments are here and here.
I don't know what the hell is the matter with Willie. The whole situation is pathetic.

Not just Willie
As for fan perception that Randolph is the one choosing to go with a six-man rotation and to use Brian Lawrence in a pennant race, team insiders suggest he's getting a raw deal - that those moves aren't really his call. Still, GM Omar Minaya insisted: "Willie's the manager. He makes those decisions. He gets input from Rick (Peterson). He gets input form the minor-league people. He's not dictated, `You have to pitch this guy.' They're talked through, and that's how it is."

circular reasoning
Wondering why Brian Lawrence started Monday instead of Philip Humber? "[Humber] got consideration, but the fact is that he had not pitched in a while," Minaya said.
We talked about this a little on Monday, but the point bears repeating: this is complete and total crap. You can't refuse to use a pitcher and then claim you're not using him because he hasn't been used enough. And, to repeat a quote from here:
"Sure, I would do that,'' Pelfrey said about the pen. "But, It's not up to me.''It's up to Randolph, who says "no'' about experimenting.
"There's not enough time to do that,'' Randolph said. "We have guys who are capable of doing that, and they have to step up.''
Humber was bypassed Monday night in favor of Brian Lawrence to start against the Washington Nationals and will be getting periodic relief innings the rest of the season.
But not enough for the playoffs to be an option.
"You don't take a young guy like that who's never done it and force-feed him,'' Randolph said.
Is he fucking serious? The Mets have pissed away their entire division lead waiting for these putative "guys who are capable of doing that" to "step up"? Doesn't that seem like a good sign that these guys might not actually be "capable of doing that," considering that "that" in this case means "preventing the Mets from losing crucial games"?
