Let's Go Nats!
My sense of manthematical symmetry would not be too disturbed if the Phillies just got eliminated, though.
Glavine
Godspeed, Tommy.

It's just unbelievable.
I'll just root for the Phils. We have no right to go the playoffs. Hopefully this disaster will make the Mets play next year not like they deserve everything. Maybe they will actually fight.
Soprry, Glavine. Just like Trachsel last year, you just can't comback.
lame
it's just the frustration talking

I don't want wholesale changes
But Randolph has to go and be replaced with someone who can actually keep the team's head in the game. I honestly think Philadelphia scared them into this tailspin, and nobody was there to get them thinking straight again.
'd like to see Minaya replaced
I'd also like to see
this seems silly to me
what?
Everyone needs to take a step back and a deep breath. On opening day, 2005, if I had told you the Mets would win 97 and 88 games in 2006 and 2007, who here wouldn't have taken that to the bank? That's what the Minaya-led front office has given us. Remember, it was 3 short years ago the Mets traded Scott Kazmir in the midst of a 71-91 season.
by Greenpoint Ian on Sep 30, 2007 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Alright
Though Minaya, at 46, is of the same generation as Beane and other avatars of the G.M.-as-dispassionate-systems-analyst trend, he's a throwback to baseball's traditional, almost romantic player-evaluation methods. Minaya won't dictate game strategy to Randolph, and he won't draft players based on moneyball algorithms.
"I trust my eyes and my instincts and my experiences," Minaya says. "I've been fortunate to be surrounded early on by a lot of pretty good young players. It brings me a lot of memory recall. When I see a kid, I think of an Ivan Rodriguez. I think of a Juan Gonzalez or a Sammy Sosa or a Kevin Brown."
fair enough
I just think it would be very unwise to blow up a good team over a bullpen meltdown in September. I think Randolph needs to go because he has no positive attributes as a manager, and I didn't think the guy was any good even when the Mets were running away with it last year.
The Red Sox didn't fire Theo Epstein after a disasterous collapse last year, nor did they make any other knee-jerk moves. Look where they are today.
by Greenpoint Ian on Sep 30, 2007 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions
I admit I missed
Unschooled in the statistical-analysis approach to talent evaluation that the young Moneyball G.M.'s love? Meet Ben Baumer and Adam Fisher, O's young numbers geeks. "Don't choose one or the other -- field guys or stat guys," cries O. "Choose both! Listen to what the church and the Commies say! Know what I'm sayin'?"
Go commies!
yeah
FWIW, I think the best way to run a team is to augment a sabermetrics approach with good scouting. The recent success of the Twins and A's (this year notwithstanding) suggests that both approaches can and do work.
by Greenpoint Ian on Sep 30, 2007 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions
what the living crap?
Hey listen, If we've learned anything
Yer right...
Think about it. You were given 7 home games against all terrible teams. You win 3 and you win the East. You win 2 you tie. We have won 1 and fell behind 7-0 because the legendary Tom Glavine couldn't get more than an out.
It's always darkest, Z

sonofa...
Message sent, however.
I know I've said it a couple of times already.
Lets put pedro in to see if we can
If somehow we end up in a playoff game @ philly who here really thinks we can beat them anyway.
Mets should cut their losses and regroup for next year. With every passing day we look more and more like idiots.

I'm not giving up.
Dont worry Tom were not mad at you!
Maybe Willie can go out and convince Nolan Ryan and Tom Seaver to come back next year.

Here's a weird thing.
Sosa's line
You know, if he had only pitched like that in a few high-leverage situations earlier this month....
Whatever, I'm not going to agonize over the blown opportunities. There's nothing that can be done about them.

Reyes we love you to
by sincethebeginning @ Amazin' Avenue on Sep 30, 2007 2:52 PM EDT reply actions
(things) I love Reyes to
- stop hitting the ball in the air
- learn to take a walk
- learn when not to steal a base
- run out every ball
And keep his head in the game on defense.
15 outs left to the season
It'll be interesting to see who takes the blame this offseason, usually its not who it should be.

by Rod Gaspar Fan Club on Sep 30, 2007 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Real teams...
I feel bad being this bitter since the Mets would otherwise be playing a 1-1 game and the bullpen has pitched very well...all we're lacking is clutch hits with runners on.
Glavine even added the error.
I'm still in shock.
Let's be honest...
OK, one. Game 1 of the Champ series last year. That's it.
In the end, resigning Glavine is ncessary, despite my white hot anger at him right now.
You crazy.
this is crazy talk
no
Carlos is an extremely valuable player, and he had a great postseason last year when pretty much everyone else (expect Delgado) couldn't hit Jeff Weaver or Jeff Suppan.
Again, I beg my fellow rational Mets fans who post here to step away from the ledge and take a deep breath and look at the big picture when considering what the Mets need to do this offseason.

Just because it's bothering me...
ZaBlanc signature line:
"CAN SOMEONE TEACH BELTRAN HOW TO GET A GOD D***ED RBI?!?!"
Carlos Beltran RBIs:
1999 - 108
2000 - 44
2001 - 101
2002 - 105
2003 - 100
2004 - 104
2005 - 78
2006 - 116
2007 - 112
FWR
There are only two possible positions here:
- IF you don't believe in team psychology, Willie needs to get shit-canned for his abysmal tactics.
- If you believe in team psychology, Willie needs to get shit-canned for this team's pathetic choke and its obviously inattentive, unmotivated play.
Agreed

MOTA?
and into the 8th
can't use your closer now!
I think Randolph learned his bullpen management from Joe Torre who preferred to have Jeff Weaver lose Game 4 of the 2003 World Series than let Mariano Rivera pitch in a tie game.

meanwhile
Milwaukee is coming back against San Diego, but that only matters if the Mets win anyway.
Jimmy Rollins
I salute you, Jimmy Rollins. You talked the talk and walked the walk all year long, and especially against the Mets.
4th Times the charm.
the bullpen
Washington down to their last 3 outs.
It's over.
yeah
I wore my cap on the bus all week and the vast majority of feedback was positive and gritty. People knew that is was do or die, but they knew the 2007 team were underperforming.
Also, Yankee fans are truly uncouth and reprehensible swine, every single one.
Is it really 5 months til Spring training?

Philadelphia Phillies
I've prepared myself for this possibility (inevitability?) since Joel Piniero 3-hit the Mets on Thursday, but I'm kind of numb, especially after Maine's dominance yesterday, which got my hopes back up.

I am coming back just to say
One more thought
Well, Ubaldo Jimenez has thrown 6 innings of shoutout ball with 1 H, 2 BB, and 10 K in Coors Field (!!!) to keep the Rockies chances alive. They're up 1-0 in the 7th.
Good luck to the Rockies, who never, ever gave up on the season. I hope they win and beat San Diego in the one-game playoff to take the wild card.

Fire Willie - start over
this team is in a world of hurt for next year...need a outfielder, about four to five pitchers, a catcher etc etc.
start over...fire willie first
Thank goodness its over
Thanks for showing us how a real team grinds it out and makes it happen when noone else believes that you can.
And For Manuel for making the tough decisions despite what everyone else things Meyers to closer... Brilliant.
Marlins and Nats:
Thanks for showing us how to have pride, and despite having no chance whatsoever, not mailing it in during the last two weeks.
If Willie learns anything from this season, I hope it is that EVERY FRIGGIN GAME COUNTS. Back in April - JUNE when we blew off games and you gave us that 162 game season stuff... like "it will all work out somehow" is crap. Great teams make it happen. Great Managers inspire their players. You sir, are not a great manager.
