Let's Go Nats!
There are so many possible outcomes, still, on this final day of the season, that my head hurts a little.  Therefore, I am secretly hoping for the most confusing possible thing to happen: a four-way tie for the NL East and wild-card spots.

My sense of manthematical symmetry would not be too disturbed if the Phillies just got eliminated, though.

Glavine
I know he looked bad in his 2 previous starts, but there's nobody I'd rather have start this game (OK, I'd rather have a pitch count-free Pedro start it).  I generally don't buy into the "veteran experience" angle, but I just trust Glavine to do this, like he's done it in critical games so many times before for both Atlanta and us.

Godspeed, Tommy.

by Greenpoint Ian on Sep 30, 2007 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't want wholesale changes
Other than Randolph getting the axe, I'm happy with the core of the team and the front office.  The only major move I'd like to see them attempt is asking Minnesota for Johan Santana.  I think a rotation of Santana, healthy Pedro, Maine, Perez, and whoever would be unstoppable.

But Randolph has to go and be replaced with someone who can actually keep the team's head in the game.  I honestly think Philadelphia scared them into this tailspin, and nobody was there to get them thinking straight again.

Myself not use words like 'd and basebally.

by DavidNYC on Sep 30, 2007 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

this seems silly to me
I don't really care if he's "anti-intellectual" as long as he makes smart moves -- he doesn't have to be a literary critic.  The guy still has made some great deals for this club (consider Maine, Perez, and Duque all being the fruits of his trades).

by anonymous on Sep 30, 2007 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

what?
Minaya might not be Bill James, but he ain't Ned Colletti either.  If he himself isn't an expert on sabermetrics, someone who is definitely works in that office, and Omar listens to him.  Some of Minaya's moves have definitely come from a stats-oriented angle.

Everyone needs to take a step back and a deep breath.  On opening day, 2005, if I had told you the Mets would win 97 and 88 games in 2006 and 2007, who here wouldn't have taken that to the bank?  That's what the Minaya-led front office has given us.  Remember, it was 3 short years ago the Mets traded Scott Kazmir in the midst of a 71-91 season.

Fire Willie Randolph!

by Greenpoint Ian on Sep 30, 2007 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Alright
Maybe I'm being a bit unfair, but stuff like this always rankled me:

Though Minaya, at 46, is of the same generation as Beane and other avatars of the G.M.-as-dispassionate-systems-analyst trend, he's a throwback to baseball's traditional, almost romantic player-evaluation methods. Minaya won't dictate game strategy to Randolph, and he won't draft players based on moneyball algorithms.

"I trust my eyes and my instincts and my experiences," Minaya says. "I've been fortunate to be surrounded early on by a lot of pretty good young players. It brings me a lot of memory recall. When I see a kid, I think of an Ivan Rodriguez. I think of a Juan Gonzalez or a Sammy Sosa or a Kevin Brown."

by DavidNYC on Sep 30, 2007 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

fair enough
But I think he's also got guys in his front office that don't think that way, and they probably prevent a lot of groupthink.  You really can't argue with the results of a lot of his moves.  He turned Kris Benson and Xaiver Nady into Hernandez, Perez, and Maine.

I just think it would be very unwise to blow up a good team over a bullpen meltdown in September.  I think Randolph needs to go because he has no positive attributes as a manager, and I didn't think the guy was any good even when the Mets were running away with it last year.

The Red Sox didn't fire Theo Epstein after a disasterous collapse last year, nor did they make any other knee-jerk moves.  Look where they are today.

Fire Willie Randolph!

by Greenpoint Ian on Sep 30, 2007 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I admit I missed
This SI piece from this summer - more heartening:
Unschooled in the statistical-analysis approach to talent evaluation that the young Moneyball G.M.'s love? Meet Ben Baumer and Adam Fisher, O's young numbers geeks. "Don't choose one or the other -- field guys or stat guys," cries O. "Choose both! Listen to what the church and the Commies say! Know what I'm sayin'?"

Go commies!

by DavidNYC on Sep 30, 2007 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah
That's what I was referring to when I said that he probably has guys that prevent groupthink.

FWIW, I think the best way to run a team is to augment a sabermetrics approach with good scouting.  The recent success of the Twins and A's (this year notwithstanding) suggests that both approaches can and do work.

All of our pitching sucks anyway.........in fact if marlins dont score at least 3 more this game we should be thankful.

Maybe Willie can go out and convince Nolan Ryan and Tom Seaver to come back next year.

speak for yourself
I, for one, am mad at Glavine.  Sure, bad luck can cause any pitcher's stuff to mysteriously disappear for a start or two.  But if anyone should know how to gut his way through an inning or three without his best stuff -- in the one most crucial game he's pitched all year -- it's the supposed big-game veteran Glavine.  But instead, he really fucked us this time.

by anonymous on Sep 30, 2007 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree
he needed to gut it out. Look what Pedro did faced with similar situation on Thursday he did what he had to do to keep the Mets in the game. Tommy didn't do that. It was a gutless performance IMO.

So what are you saying,
that Tommy's finished?  I can't imagine he'd like to go out like that.  I think he's a servicable #3 pitcher still, despite his poor performance down the stretch this year.  He's just not an "ace" and probably never really was one, for us anyway.  I see Pedro as a solid #2.  With Maine and Perez as 4 and 5, we're still lacking that true ace.

ideally Santana
or another good starter acquired through trade.  Failing that, I think an upgraded bullpen behind Humber/Pelfrey/etc could work for a year (or until a midseason trade).  The starting rotation hasn't been this team's biggest problem so far, and Glavine isn't providing much more than back-of-the-rotation filler innings.

by anonymous on Sep 30, 2007 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

That's a little rough,
considering Glavine's numbers this year.  He's not in Trachsel territory quite yet.  Pelfrey and Humber have yet to prove that they're ready, and if we're to get Santana in a trade, I'd imagine we'd be sending one if not both of them to Minnesota.

Here's a weird thing.
It's so unusual to see the Mets playing from behind these past 2 years.  The only times it's really occurred is in game 7 last year, and these past few days.  They gave it a good shot at coming back in the 9th inning last year but fell short, obviously.  I guess I'm just rambling at this point but I guess what I'm saying is that we just haven't seen them in the underdog role much at all and so I don't know what to expect from them.  It's a test of their gut, I suppose.

Should be noted the other teams who see the importance of today are playing well.  Padres up 3, Phils up 2, Rockies through the top of the 1st.

I feel bad being this bitter since the Mets would otherwise be playing a 1-1 game and the bullpen has pitched very well...all we're lacking is clutch hits with runners on.

Glavine even added the error.

Let's be honest...
We really need to try to move Beltran.  For the money we're paying, he doesn't give us the bat we need when we need the big hit.  Anyone who accuses A-Rod of soft numbers (except for this year) is dreaming if you think Beltran does much for us.  Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single big hit Beltran provided us.

OK, one.  Game 1 of the Champ series last year.  That's it.

In the end, resigning Glavine is ncessary, despite my white hot anger at him right now.

this is crazy talk
Beltran is such an asset that teams would be lining up to deal top prospects to get him at full price.  He's among the top 10 or 20 in the league in VORP and plays well at a premium defensive position.  He is one of the three or four core young/in-prime players for the Mets to put the rest of the team together around (for me, those are Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Maine, Perez).

by anonymous on Sep 30, 2007 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

no
Anyone who accuses A-Rod of soft numbers is being ridiculous, and the same goes for Beltran.

Carlos is an extremely valuable player, and he had a great postseason last year when pretty much everyone else (expect Delgado) couldn't hit Jeff Weaver or Jeff Suppan.

Again, I beg my fellow rational Mets fans who post here to step away from the ledge and take a deep breath and look at the big picture when considering what the Mets need to do this offseason.

Today's update: too slow with the hook for Proven Veteran Glavine while he screws the pooch, and goes straight to gas-can Sosa when the few trustworthy short-relief guys in the pen are perfectly ready to go (because of course they're the "late-inning" guys in Willie's head, no matter this game was basically lost before the Mets came to bat).  Then somehow he managed to get only an inning of work out of El Duque while pushing Schoeneweis as far as he could go.

There are only two possible positions here:

  • IF you don't believe in team psychology, Willie needs to get shit-canned for his abysmal tactics.
  • If you believe in team psychology, Willie needs to get shit-canned for this team's pathetic choke and its obviously inattentive, unmotivated play.

I am coming back just to say
goodbye for the season. Many times I said stupid things and I apologize for that. After over 40 years of watching this team, I have never been disappointed in the NY Mets. There have been many heartbreaks, but this is in a different sphere. I pride myself on respecting people who work hard, try hard and have pride in what they do. For the most part it seems that most of the players on this team don't work hard or have pride. Gary said that Delgado and Pedro have said that the team was so good they often get bored. How can you root for such people. Sports is often a microcosm of life and that's why I love it so much and why it can make a grown man like me cry. This is not a time to say wait until next year, but a time to ponder the lesson of this team and our reaction to them. I will never root for another team and continue to root against the Yankees, but if this team is mostly intact in 2008 I would really be hard pressed to follow them with any sort of passion. Sorry for the length of this post and thanks Eric for your excellent work in putting this together and giving me the opportunity to vent. Have a wonderful off-season everybody

One more thought
If you had to pick the guy to pitch in a do-or-die game at the end of the year, do you pick Tom Glavine, or the legendary Ubaldo Jimenez?

Well, Ubaldo Jimenez has thrown 6 innings of shoutout ball with 1 H, 2 BB, and 10 K in Coors Field (!!!) to keep the Rockies chances alive.  They're up 1-0 in the 7th.

Good luck to the Rockies, who never, ever gave up on the season.  I hope they win and beat San Diego in the one-game playoff to take the wild card.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
