I don't know what "winning players" are
But if slapping that label on Wright, Reyes and Beltran means that they won’t be traded, that’s good enough for me.

I'm not a big fan of Omar
But at least I think he sees the value in these young stars and won’t be persuaded to trade them just to “change the culture” of the team.

Didn't the Mets Collapse Three Years in a Row?
Seriously, I don’t know how this started, but Bill Simmons (maybe he’s starting it) in his piece about Manny today mentioned that the Mets collapsed for the third straight season. I don’t know about all that. They pretty much held their lead and won the East in 06 (I should know. I was at Shea that night.) Are ESPN folks so in love with the idea of hating NY that they would call getting to Game 7 of the NLCS a collapse? (Losing to the eventual WS champ, too.) Jesus. I know Simmons is not a very smart baseball writer, but he’s not beyond promoting a silly meme.

I remember the post "Fired Willie Randolph in Anaheim Interview w/Minaya"
- Horrible orator
- Vague as the sun is bright
I just finished reading the MetsBlog.com transcript of the conference call. It’s like listening to “W” regurgitate what’s already been stated in the news when he addresses the nation about the financial situation. He doesn’t provide anything substantive.
There was really nothing of substance that was dispensed during the conference call. He basically stated what everyone already knows. I don’t even know why people bother reporting sometimes. There’s usually nothing new that is stated. It’s actually just frustrating expecting these people to say something of relevance when 95% of the time they don’t.

I guess part of the reason for the call being so vague...
is that at this point he’s not allowed to say anything about players on other teams he’s interested in because that’d be classified as tampering.
In any case, I’m with Eric: if the “winning players” label helps to assure everyone that Wright and Reyes and Beltran are going nowhere in a way that saying they are “incredibly good at baseball” would not, hey, go ahead.
Simmons is an idiot and he’s all about silly memes, so that doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.

what? no mention of Aaron Heilman?
by the number of times Jerry trotted him out in september, I’d a swore he was a key player!

Heilman
So it came out that he pitched most of the year with a, what was it, a foot injury? Without complaining about it or anything? And the three previous years, when he was healthy, he was very effective? Look, I know Heilman has been a popular scapegoat this year, but if you believe he can be healthy again, I don’t see why you wouldn’t bring him back. Dumping him now would be selling low, akin to the ever-popular Milledge trade.

the problem
with this is the fans could send him into mental tailspin. They’ll be merciless he if comes back.

I don't think that's a reason to dump him
If you can get something valuable in return then I would move him. But he is still under control for two more years (I believe) and he could be much better if he could keep the ball in the park.
I’m not a big Heilman fan, but it’s not like he has an albatross of a contract like Castillo where getting rid of him at any cost makes sense.
I would hate to see a repeat of the Dan Wheeler or Heath Bell situations.
