Wednesday Applesauce
In Arizona:
- Jason Vargas allowed one run on four hits in 2.0 innings.
- Tobi Stoner allowed three runs on three hits and a walk in 1.2 innings.
- Daniel Murphy was still nowhere to be found.
In the Dominican Republic:
- Fernando Tatis went 0-for-3 with a walk.
In Puerto Rico:
- Nick Evans went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts.
- Eddie Camacho struck out one in a perfect inning of relief.
- Jesus Feliciano went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs scored.
At MetsGeek, Mike Newman wonders if Mets prospects are especially overhyped, and, if so, how they come to be overhyped.
At RotoGraphs, Brian Joura talks about David Wright and how high he should go in your typical fantasy draft. The bottom line: If you pick third overall, Wright shouldn't be around by the time you make your first-round selection.
At FanGraphs, Eric Seidman talks about Pedro Martinez and his future in the big leagues. His Marcel projection isn't too hot, though the Bill James projection is very optimistic.
Buried in his most recent chat, Rob Neyer mentions that his ESPN.com blog will be coming out from behind the Insider pay wall. His latest entry should be available to all. The URL still points to Insider, but I was able to read it without being logged into my friend's Insider account, so, yay!
Phillies blog The700Level wades through some of professional sports' biggest locales to find the biggest city rival to Philadelphia. It doesn't take them long to call off the search.

The 700Level
I enjoyed their outrage at Ryan Howard’s failure to be listed on the MVP ballot of a Nats beat writer. I did not notice that after the voting. But, you know, good on the guy to recognize Utley over Howard in the context of that vote.
Also — have we seen the last of the Irish Hammer? Time to send out an APB?

I was just about to post the same thing
Holy crap, are they ANGRY down in Philly that that one dude didn’t put Howard on his ballot. Maybe they didn’t notice that Howard wasn’t all that good this year? Coincidentally, directly to the right of the window in which I’m typing right now is a link to the Top Fifty Players Of 2008 article on BtB; you know who’s nowhere on that list? Ryan Howard. You know who IS in the top 16 on that list? All eight of the position players on Rich Campbell’s MVP ballot (which also included Lincecum and Johan).
You can’t really put Teixeira on an NL MVP ballot based on the portion of the season he played in Atlanta, and you could make a case that Beltran deserved a spot on the tail end of the ballot instead of Holliday, or that Manny wasn’t in LA for long enough to deserve consideration at all, but really, I thought Campbell’s ballot made a lot of sense in general. Now, the dude in Milwaukee who put Pujols SEVENTH, HE is off his rocker.

Couldn't have put it better myself
That’s a fan base that can find a reason to be outraged about EVERYTHING. I suppose I should have added to my comment above that I applaud Campbell’s votes beyond just Utley — his entire list was pretty darned spot-on in my book (although Wright might be a bit high at #2 and I still can’t see voting for Manny and his 53 games played).

Me and a Phillies fan on the same page
“And oh yeah, those Fightin Phils have a rival, don’t they? Let the Yankees and Sox get all the headlines. The Mets-Phillies rivalry is as good as any in sports.”
One can hope that, with the Phillies winning the World Series, this rivalry will take more of a center stage going forward. I’m sure I’m not the only one sick and tired of the Red Sox-Yankees overhype. I want to see the media overhype the Mets-Phillies!

Absurd comment of the day coming from, who else...?
…Sorry, I couldn’t resist. But I just saw SB Nation advertising for Rod Stewart. It’s official. The economic crisis is in full bloom now.
