Fuentes's Agents Make Mets Offer (Rocky Mountain News)

Per sir Tracy Ringolsby:

The agents for Rockies closer and free agent Brian Fuentes reportedly put a four-year, $44 million proposal on the table to the Mets. Executives with Cleveland and St. Louis indicated they would be interested only in a one-year or two-year deal.

Knock that down to three years at the same annual salary and I'm a buyer. Sure as hell beats five years and $75 million for Francisco Rodriguez.

Hell, I'm down w/this...except for the four year part.

I don’t like his age (35) and then signing him for a guaranteed four years. I do like his stats though.

Two years in a row, his ERA has declined – 3.44, 3.08, 2.73 (good)
2008 ERA: 2.73 (very good)
SVO:SV – 34:30 (very, very good)
SO:BB – 82:22(about a 4:1 ratio – “sho nuff”)

  • I’d like to see how many of those saves came in Coors Field as opposed to on the road. The more saves he got in Coors Field, the more impressed I’d be considering the balls ability to launch off of the bat like the Space Shuttle out of Cape Canaveral.

agree with all of that

somehow I didn’t realize Fuentes was 35. I’m not sure whether I’m more nervous that A) Omar will stick to his guns on the number of years and lose out to somebody else who’s willing to go four, or B) Omar will agree to the extra year like he did with Pedro and Fuentes won’t be any good by the end of the contract.

Spit!!!

good catch CPP.

I guess my math skills (or lack thereof) was the reason for me getting a B in microeconomics vice an A.

Well then, his age really isn’t a large problem at all. Anyone know if he’s had any major health issues?

Spent a few weeks on the DL with a strained lat in 2007

There doesn’t seem to have been anything severe though

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
