Wait this was an actual quote from Omar?

“I’m probably not going to be in there right now, financially,” Minaya said. “Not after spending all the money that I did on K-Rod.”

I’d like to know the context because I imagine(hope) it couldn’t have been completely serious.

Also apparently Peter Gammons mentioned we were interested in Alex Cora.

Not bad.

I wouldn’t mind Alex Cora as a utility IF. We really need someone who can play competent SS so Reyes can have a day off once a month (Easley was terrible at SS.)

I hope Minaya is playing possum here. Although, he may have something up his sleeve… he has a history of zigging when every expects him to zag.

Eh, ok, I guess

I suppose Marquis would be a decent 5th starter. He has decent stuff, but has always been wildly inconsistent.

If they get Marquis they need to make sure they get one of: Lowe, Sheets, Perez.

by SQUAD on Dec 11, 2008 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not sure

Marquis isn’t much better than the other 5th starter options, maybe worse, and now we’re left with one lefty in our pen, putz and k-rod, who I imagine are going to be used pretty strictly in the 8th and 9th innings and a lot of guys with extreme righty/lefty splits.

Also it depends on how much of Marquis’s contract the cubs eat.

I don't mind that so much

as long as we find another lefty to come out of the ’pen

quaaa?

we spent all our money on a guy who pitches 70 innings a year so now we cant afford somebody who pitches 200? god damn it thats retarded. this better some bs’ing GM tactic, omar.

seriously, who are the 4 and 5 picthers right now? Ayala?! Neise?! god damn it!

by kendynamo on Dec 11, 2008 4:28 PM EST reply actions

Well the only top tier starter I’d like them to sign is Ben Sheets so I don’t think this is a bad thing at all…I am actively against signing Lowe/Burnett so I’m glad were not looking at them.
I’ll be happy with just re-signing Perez and then maybe trading for an inning eater.

what do you have against Lowe?

not trying to be antagonistic, just genuinely curious. I wasn’t a big Lowe guy at first either, but the more I look at his numbers and the other options on the market, the more I’d like to see them get him.

I keep going back and forth...

If my life was on the line, I would want Sheets starting that game. Then Lowe. Then Ollie (with Ollie, I might as well play Russian Roulette… I would have better odds of living, and I think I’ve established that I love Ollie.)

To me, Sheets has the best stuff, hands down. Then Ollie, then Lowe.

However, Lowe is more durable than Sheets and consistently goes deeper in games than Ollie.

But Ollie is 27, Sheets 31, Lowe 35.

My point? Each candidate has their pros and cons and which one you prefer is really a personal choice, imo. In the end, I think the Mets should sign a guy who fits their needs the best. To me, that guy is probably Lowe. They could use a legit #2 to take the pressure off of Maine and Pelfrey. They also need a guy who will give them innings, because even though the pen is improved, you do not want to make the same mistake and burn those guys out. As much as I love Ollie, I think we have enough youth on the staff with Pelfrey and Maine, with Niese and Parnell in the wings and Holt on the horizon. Also, Johan isn’t exactly a graybeard yet either.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
