The Phillies Still Won't Shut Up

Star-divide

Far be it for me to disparage someone's right to speak, opine and in the case of Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hammels, blabber on.  But the constant badgering of the METS team as choke artists generally and showboatsmen specifically by Phillies players just continues to show their own lack of class and in this case a bit of hypocrisy.

In this article Cole Hamels discusses how he and his teammates gave Shane Victorino a bit of a ribbing by comparing him to Jose Reyes.  Apparently our beloved Jose likes to "point his finger up as if he won the game" after hitting a homerun.   Seems as if Victorino did the same thing early in game 2 of the NLDS after hitting a grand slam off of C.C. Sabathia.  "Even though you hit the big home run, you don't need to pimp it."Cole Hamels also states:  "For the past two years they (METS) have been choke artists."

So let me get this straight, in the pantheon that is sports today, you're gonna give grief to a METS ballplayer, knowing that he plays for your most heated rival for showboating AND calling the METS "choke artist" TWO MONTHS after winning the World Series?  You couldn't be smart and take the high road, you just had to TRY and be cute about the METS.  Well you know what?  I hope you get "pimped" right in the neck by a Pelfrey 'heater' when we lock horns in '09.

As a Phillies fan...

…I was a little surprised to hear this. But I do have to add just to be fair: Cole was asked by the interviewers if he believed the Mets were choke artists, and was also told that many fans of the Mets also believe they are choke artists. He just gave an honest answer, as impolitic as it might have come off; he noted that the Mets did blow leads the past two years.

I’m not sure if the situation had been reversed that any star Mets player wouldn’t have ribbed the Phillies in a similar way…

by ajay on Dec 11, 2008 9:31 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

you're right

I read elsewhere that he originally tried to change the topic but they goaded him into answering. And it was on WFAN, not some Philly station, so he obviously knew the Mets and their fans were gonna hear this. That said, I don’t agree with the “choke artists” label. Maybe in ‘07, but not last year. Last year, we just didn’t have a good enough bullpen, and that’s all there is to it. The Phillies were the better team. In fact, had we held onto the division lead over the last two weeks, the Phillies would have been the choke artists. As it stands, the better team won last year.

seriously

Anyone who’s trying to paint the 2008 Mets as being the same story as the 2007 Mets is a writer looking for a story. The 2007 Mets choked, absolutely, and it was abysmal. The 2008 Mets were just plain not very good.

I don't really buy that excuse

If an announcer is “pressing” you, you laugh about it and move on. But I don’t mind. At some point, these comments and accusations (which, as Lou points out, are totally hypocritical) will come back. The perception is that the Mets are choke artists, which is fair. But these Phillies players are putting the heat on their teammates, not their opponents, when they say these things.

The way I see it

Everyone realizes Hamels is a stud, and the Phillies are the World Champs. No bragging or slamming of other teams is necessary.

Show some class and humility Hamels.

Eh.

This kind of crap can work itself out on the field. I guess Straw’s response was that his Mets would have “stuck one right in his neck.” Good. Let’s see if Big Pelf or Maine or whoever else does so next year. The guys on the Phillies can talk all they want right now. Fair enough, whether I think it’s proper or classy or whatever. Let’s see our lads take care of it on the field.

I think you get my point though.

Hamels is preaching “holier than though” behavior yet, can’t take the high road when someone’s “searching” for material.

Speaking of -

Has anyone checked out Johan Santana’s B-R page lately? The sponsor thingy says "HAHAHAHAHA – The Mets are a joke!!! " with a link to a blog called Phillies Nation, which is kind of a shame because it seems like pretty professionally run blog. Whether it was the owner or writer who did it or a reader, it still makes them look like huge jackasses.

Yes Lou… you should be talking about class… the person who then states that he hopes Hamels (at least learn to spell his name) gets “‘pimped’ right in the neck by a Pelfrey ‘heater’ .” Yes… you spew forth class… nice to see that you hope someone gets hit in the neck with a mid-90s fastball… nothing like wishing possible death upon someone… get off your fucking soap box

and I said it for a reason… the OP talks about “taking the high road” in situations and class and then ends it by hoping one of the Phillies could possibly receive a life threatening injury… and don’t tell me a 95 mph fast ball to the head/neck couldn’t do that… no matter how much i hate your team, i wouldn’t wish something like that on your players… even screwing around…

stay classy foos05

Lou may be a bit of a overly hyper fan at times but he is our overly hyper fan. It seems to me as if the so called problem that other teams have with the Mets is really a problem with one player Jose Reyes. Deal with it. Reyes hasn’t cost the Mets games because of his celebrating, he has won the Mets a lot of games with his play. Now while his antics can be very immature at times, I really don’t see that they are that much worse than what many other pros in all sports do. And he is, despite what the media and idiot Phillies fans claim, a great player who is only getting better. Remember that Jimmy Rollins was considered a big tool only a few years ago. And a joke MVP award to Rollins aside, Reyes is a better player than Rollins. So yeah, maybe Jose needs to grow up a little but it won’t help the Mets win pennants. A bullpen will. And if we had one last year, Jose would have been doing as much celebrating as he wanted to and Cole Hammels couldn’t have said anything.
And you might want to look at how Cole Hamels pitches against the Mets before letting him call anyone choke artists. Generally we have done ok against him. In fact we did pretty well against the Phillies in head to head play this year.
Seriously Phillies fans, you won a title and its great. Enjoy it. Don’t make yourself look foolish. You never know when karma comes back to bite you.

by Endys Game on Dec 12, 2008 9:08 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hey, I wasn’t the one that hoped one of our pitchers might kill one of yours with a fastball… I was merely speaking in terms that Lou would understand… If the conclusion of your (Lou’s) arguement hinges on the hope of an opposing player possibly getting killed because of some media blurb, then obviously speaking rationally to you (Lou) is pointless…

But T.O. and his sideline histrionics wear on a quarterback. He's like the hot stripper you tried to clean up and convert into a real girlfriend. It's a lot of fun until the moment she has her second drink while out to eat with your parents. You unravel quicker than she does.

And I could care less about Jose’s antics… I care about the 2007 and 2008 NL East flags, 2008 NL Champion Flag, and the 2008 WS Champion Flag that now fly over Citizen’s Bank Park… Jose can talk and showboat all he wants, and sit home in the postseason….

However, no matter how much I hate the Mets, I’m not going to hope one of the Phillies’ players purposefully injures, or potentially kills one of your players… Not even in jest… so that’s horseshit.

Why do we care about this?

The Phillies won the World Series last year, they’ve earned the right to gloat. The ‘86 Mets were one of the most arrogant teams out there, yet they’ve been canonized in NY.

I’ll end with what I always say to fans of opposing teams who hate Reyes’s dancing: if you don’t like it, then shut them up by beating them on the field.

by SQUAD on Dec 12, 2008 11:13 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My sentiments exactly

Take care of it on the field. We hate how much they talk; they hate Jose Reyes. Whatever. Take care of it on the field.

Exactly

Hamels, Rollins, Utley, whoever . . . those guys can say whatever they want. I don’t care. Let’s hope the Mets take care of their business on the field in 2009 if they are all offended. SQUAD and I are pretty much preaching the same thing here.

First Post Here...

Just wanted to comment on this issue…

Hamels can really say whatever he wants, being that he was the best player in the playoffs and his team won the World Series. However, its ridiculous that he would do it on a NEW YORK radio station, and be so hypocritical to criticize players like Jose Reyes when the Phils have someone who’s worse in Shane Victorino…

The fact that ever though the Phillies won this year and they’re still griping about the mets and making backhanded comments really goes to show you that this team has an inferiority complex. I’ve been a Met fan for all my 25 years and I can honestly say that I’ve always despised the Phils, more than the Yankees or Braves or Cards or whoever…

Hopefully we take it to them this season… Go Mets!

I don't care what Phillie fans say

I just find it very amusing that’s all. Reyes can still get under their skin even though they won. That tells me he is doing something right. And the rest of the league can’t say anything. Other than Hanley Ramriez, there ain’t a shortstop in the league that can touch this guy and he is only getting better.
The 85 Mets never acted like the 2008 Phillies.

seriously

if the league structure was what it is today, the Mets would have made the playoffs every year from 1984-1990, and they wouldn’t have even needed the wild card, they would have won the East each of those years. That’s why the Yankees and Braves streaks aren’t quite as impressive as they sound: it’s way, way easier to make the playoffs now than it was prior to 1993.

One saved round...

Perhaps, due to my limited time utilizing the blog I have failed to realize that different team’s blogs certainly have different personalities. I was introduced to the SB Nation blog back in May of ’08. The buddy who introduced me to it was a Cubs fan. I went immediately to their site and saw how they discussed / chatted different issues about their team and baseball in general.

After bouncing through various teams blogs I found that the Tampa Bay Rays had the most attended and perhaps the funniest comments / gifs that I had seen after a couple of weeks perusing the blogs. I thought that this style was the S.O.P. for all teams (definitely not) and tried to use the same type of silly / immaturish banter on Amazin Avenue. Obviously this blog is above that and definitely for the better.

After writing this fan post and viewing some of the responses, I definitely understand the nuances between the different team’s blogs. In the grand scheme of things blogs can either be taken seriously for their content via reporting and opinions or they can be discarded entirely for childlike rambling, or they can be enjoyed by the casual fan utilizing a mixture of both.

In conclusion, my post(s) should be taken with a grain of salt. I will admit that it would behoove me to “check” myself from time to time with the content and the manner in which I post. I just hope we and the rest of those out there don’t take themselves too seriously when it comes to blogging. I hope we can still have some fun.

Anyone who has issues with words on a blog is a moron… This blog is a very good read about the mets, and humor is really the only way you can talk about them lately without crying…

agree with this

also, how random is it that the Rays have possibly the most thriving blog on SBN. I didn’t realize they had fans before October…I went to a game at the Trop a few years ago, walked up to the stadium and got 3rd row seats right behind the 3rd base dugout. Try doing that anywhere else…

by cjmulrain on Dec 12, 2008 5:07 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The thing is

no one ever want to their games, but even before last year they had an oddly successful blog. I looked at DRays Bay two years ago, expecting to see 0-2 comments on every article and game thread, but even then they had dozens of active members. I’m sure they’re now doing even better, what with people actually going to Rays games for a month.

There blogs were always pretty nuts this past year. During Rays / Cubs games and Rays / BoSox games, it was maddening. Sometimes over 1000 posts. They had standard gifs and animated gifs. It was a complete riot participating in a blog that was part of a small market team.

I had to wonder though, during the mid portion of the season; “Why weren’t MORE people going to the games?” Perhaps it’s cheaper watching on t.v. and blogging. Also, perhaps many people didn’t want to go to the Trop. Regardless, watching / reading and participating in their blogs was a treat.

LOL!

Classic. I guess since I’m not “old school” I don’t have a problem with players celebrating. In basketball and football every little achievement from a slam dunk to a 1st down, respectively, is highlighted with some kind of chest bump, chest thump or thankfulness to the gods in the form of pointing towards the sky. Personally, I think it just comes with the territory.

I don’t understand why baseball is such a ‘holier than thou’ sport in which celebrating must come at the end of the game in the form of a fist pump by the pitcher as he strikes someone out or the entire team gathering around the plate and mobbing a batter / runner after he hits a walk off home run.

This unwritten code of not being able to celebrate after doing something relevant or exciting is just old fashioned IMO. (Regardless of who it is).

Agreed.

Perhaps the most ridiculous “controversy” of all was the raging discussion over Joba’s fist pumps. A FIST PUMP! He wasn’t dancing, pointing to the sky, doing some elaborate handshake, or a hop… a slight fist pump.

Baseball really needs to get over itself when it comes to this stuff.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
