Goodbye Show, hello, uh, Connor Robertson.

Not sure I like this
Outside of Feliciano and Putz and K-rod, who I expect will be kept to strict 8th and 9th roles, we have a lot of roogys now. Show and Feliciano did their job when they were brought in against left handers.
i respect your opinion
Gina but i don’t see Show and Feliciano in the “did their jobs” category. Or I can’t. Not willing. Misuse or not, they sucked with a capital S and all things equal i’d rather see someone else suck.

please research before opening your mouth
show, a known LOOGY, vs lefties this year: .178/.243/.277, .520 OPS.
he did his job when asked. not his fault that he was misused by idiotic managers.
I'm not sure it was entirely the managers fault.
We really had nothing but a bullpen full of guys who could only pitch to one side of the plate or couldn’t get anyone out last year. They didn’t have a lot of options.
I'm not sold on Beimel
He had a great ERA, but a pretty bad WHIP last year, and he doesn’t even have a 1.5/1 K/BB ration. He doesn’t strike out nearly enough batters, which is doom for a reliever.
Side note: I love when you read comments on other blogs or on like ESPN or something, and someone puts “statistics” in quotes. Like – yea, he had a good “statistical” season, but he doesn’t strike the fear of God into opposing players, so he’s pretty worthless.
I think
he has a pretty good rep as a LOOGY. He was the only person who could strike out Bonds for a long while if I remember rightly.
At first I thought this was for Connor Jackson
which didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. This Robertson guy only has 9 ML innings, so I can’t imagine Omar is expecting him to be on the opening day roster. I agree with SQUAD, I think this is a salary dump. Maybe Omar’s planning on making a move for Lowe now?
Lol I thought the same thing when I saw it on metsblog
I got half-way through my victory lap before it occurred to me to check again.
i first thought they traded him

Salary Dump?
Show wasn’t making that much—$3.5 mil or so for 1 year. That’s a drop in the bucket against what it will cost to sign Lowe, or Sheets, or Ollie, or…
by madisonmetsfan on Dec 13, 2008 10:06 AM EST up reply actions
This isn't a "salary dump"
This is a bad player dump.
Projected FIP (Marcels):
Shoeneweis: 4.71
Robertson: 4.27
Ok.
Look, I love stats as much as the next guy, but Robertson has pitched in what, 9 games in the Majors? Excuse me if I don’t put too much weight into his projections for next year.
(I’m about to do something I hate, so bear with me) If this kid Robertson is better than Schoenweis, why the heck would the Diamonbacks make this trade? Schoenweis makes more money, is older, and I would bet this kid has better stuff. Why give up on a 27 year old lefty with a 3:1 K:BB ratio?
Would I be surprised if he turned out to be better than Schoenweis this season? No, but that’s not exactly saying a whole lot.
Robertson is a righty.
Not lefty.

I wonder how much of his salary
they are paying. The article cites “cash considerations.”

I don't care if they got Sarah Connor
This is a good trade!!
which Sarah Connor?
The one from the movies or the one from the TV show. They’re both pretty hot, but Sarah Connor circa Terminator 2 could probably hit .280
Only .280?
But she’s pretty ripped. Probably has good power to the gaps. Not a home run hitter, but I could see 30 doubles a year. And she’s plenty patient, probably knows how to work a count, so I would expect a high OBP too.

damn omar
i knew he wanted to upgrade the bullpen, but he’s pretty much entirely replaced the bullpen. feliciano, stokes, and duaner better watch their backs!
I think Stokes is safe
He doesn’t carry the taint of two failed pennant runs like the others do. Also, he’s much, much cheaper than Show, and can make spot starts.

Allow me to say...
Ditching Schoeneweis is like the icing on the last few days’ cake. I love the 2009 Mets’ bullpen. No, I don’t just love it. I lurve it. I loaf it.
OH BOY OH BOY.
CAPS LOCK! YAY!
…..Bye Schoeneweis!

Daniel Cabrera
I know, i know… but his ability is tantalizing. Especially coming out of the pen.
But yeah, Nelson would be a nice addition.
Hmm
I still wonder why nobody has thought to put Cabrera in the pen… I still think about how dominant he was in the WBC a few years ago. Of all the Dominican pitchers he was by far the best…
Maybe he just needs to be around top talent to get motivated or something??

I know this has nothing to do with the Schoeneweis thread but...
I thought I’d just toss this in here because it does concern the METS generally and the Wilpon’s specifically (I didn’t think this was worthy of its own fan post).
Apparently another greedy and unethical s.o.b. (Bernard Madoff) has graced Wall Street with his foul presence and lost upwards of $50 billion (yes, billion) of investors money, notably, the firm of Fred Wilpon (whatever that is). Who knows how much money the firm of Fred Wilpon had invested with this fruitcake? I wonder if it will have an effect on the METS. If you’re interested, see link:

Hey Wigginton was non-tendered
I wonder if he’s on their radar. He’d be a definitely upgrade over Anderson/Easley as a super utility guy.
Multi-tool player as well.
Can give rest to Wright / Delgado / Castillo

Yes. Bring back Wiggy.
Fan favorite. Gary Cohen really likes him, too.

plus, think of the scrappiness
Wigginton automatically boosts any team’s hustlegrit to near Eckstein levels of dirt-doggitude.
True.
Plus, he’ll roll you in a bar brawl. That goes a long way, in my book.

2nd Spot
With Chavez and now possibly Argenis gone Manuel is running out of shitty hitters who he can plug into the 2 hole from time to time (i mean no disrespect to either player). He must be mad stressed.

this guy
is either gonna really, really suck, or he’s gonna be Jamie Moyer. Maybe he could be an effective LOOGY, but I wonder if a) he’d be willing to sign for that, b) how much that would cost, and c) if that’s actually the Mets plan, why didn’t they just keep Show.
Well if "The Show" was off broadway
this guy may just be off-off broadway.
Perhaps this acquisition is in some way attributable to the Wilpon’s investment loss?

i would assume...
that the mets are not run off of the wilpons’ personal fortune but rather from the revenue they generate every year. the mets are profitable, so the wilpons should be taking in more money from the mets than they’re spending on them. so this whole scandal shouldn’t really affect omar’s purse.
but if i’m completely wrong and the mets go bankrupt, does anyonethink the federal government would bailout the mets? maybe we could just take some more the the TARP money from citibank.
Ah-ha . . . I see what you did there
nice one.

Metsblog is the worst.
Just clicking that link made my eyes bleed and my soul hurt.
If Cerrone and co. want to retain any relevance to anything at all, they need a pro to make the site over, and they need a rating system to rein in the commenters, who really make that place a sewer.
I don’t care how much that guy is on TV—that site is an absolute pit. Comments 177 to 172 on that post are exemplary.
Here’s to those on the side of reason, progress, and tolerance, and to those defenders of the English language. Bless us all.

and my apologies for the damage done. I may well have to read comments 172 to 177 as some sort of penance.

With a handle as literary as yours, I never would expect you to have such a base alter ego. But then again, maybe that’s the point…
I’m on to your game, Claude Cattermole CP-P: you highbrow it over here, and then your Mr. Hyde comes out when you post on Metsblog, where you rage about the racial makeup of our beloved Metropolitans. The jig is up, mon frere.

Sincerely...
Those guys post something, and in reply they get 1000 comments that are either illiterate, racist, angry, plain stupid, or some combination thereof. What’s the use?
Metsblog would be a great site if it were a closed forum in which contributers could report what they know and opine about whatever they feel like, with no unregulated participation from elsewhere. The commenting is ridiculous, and the platform the site uses makes the whole experience even worse. That site is unreadable as far as I’m concerned.

That and Cerrone & co. say some stupid stuff when they adds their opinions
The brilliance of FJM is they did their own comments.
the brillance of FJM was that they were just brilliant all around
I’m still pissed at them for taking themselves offline.
I know it has only been a couple of months, but if anyone needs a reunion tour, it’s FJM. I miss them.

Eh, Metsblog serves its purpose.
It’s essentially my Mets news aggregator. Cerrone does a decent job with that, and he has some ok sources, I guess.
But the main purpose it serves is a gathering place for the average knucklehead fan. Without Metsblog and WFAN, Amazin Avenue could become inundated with those very comments you disdain.
I think the biggest problem with Metsblog is that it isn’t very detail oriented. Like when he thought Robertson was a LHP (which led me to refer him to a LHP here… and I will never make the same mistake twice of trusting Metsblog as a news source.) His excuse in the past was,“well, I write a blog, so there will be mistakes.” But he needs to realize that as his audience has grown, he has a responsibility to post accurate info, at least, so the entire fan base doesn’t become misinformed buffoons.
i agree
it’s a good place to get the latest info on rumors, news, etc. but cerrone really needs to work on his grammar, spelling, sentence structure, etc. after four or five years of running the site, he’s should be better at avoiding many of the simple mistakes he makes all the time.
and he should really stop putting his analysis in those italicized, ellipses-filled paragraphs. it really looks bad, especially when quoted on other sites.
by englishgrey on Dec 14, 2008 11:07 AM EST up reply actions
Yup
I used to cut cerrone some slack because I think he got in over his head readership-wise before he had a chance to get good at blogging. That was a couple years ago. the dude needs to take a class in blogging, or bring someone in who can re-organize and re-design, and control that disaster of a comments section.
by HotChipWillBreakYourLegs on Dec 14, 2008 6:11 PM EST up reply actions
Fwiw
the current comment set up is only temporary. Although the regular one is still sort of a mess.
Oh
It’s not so much about the format of the comments, it’s the level of discourse, which appears to be lower than ever.
I still use Metsblog as my first source for news, and it generally leads me in the right direction.
by HotChipWillBreakYourLegs on Dec 14, 2008 6:52 PM EST up reply actions
fair enough
there’s a fine line between deadspin where I got booted for fairly innocuous comments about how unfunny it was to post ESPN internal memos (which are about as funny as the internal memos at every company i’ve ever worked for), and “DAVID RIGHT IS TEH UNCLUTHC AND SHOULD BE TRADED R NVER PLAY BASEBAL AGIN”
by HotChipWillBreakYourLegs on Dec 14, 2008 8:00 PM EST up reply actions
I agree
It seems like a lot of the more reasonable posters have moved on, and the site has really been taken over by juvenile banter and trolls. If I see one more “OMGZ IF WE DONT SIGN MANNY OMAR SUCKSSS” post over there, I’m gonna download a porn blocker and put Metsblog in it…
According to Jerry Crasnick
we’re the frontrunners for Lowe as of right now, though Metsblog reports that Omar doesn’t want to go more than $12 mil a year for him.
Maybe Minaya will bump into Lowe on 34th Street.
But hey, you never know. Yanks seem out of the Lowe sweepstakes, and unless the Red Sox pony up, I think that would leave the Mets as the only east coast team with deep enough pockets.
If I were Lowe I wouldn’t want to go back to the AL.
The Braves were going to offer something like 70 million to Burnett
Obviously they won’t offer that too Lowe but they technically have big pockets too with all the money they have coming off the books. And the Phillies were also supposedly interested.
I could see the Braves.
They need to do something or they risk becoming irrelevant.
The Phillies seem to reach a certain point when it comes to salary and then they back off.
How about Minaya sits down with ol’ Scotty B and negotiates deals for both Perez and Lowe? I know, I know… wishful thinking.
Does he represent any of the LFs?
Maybe Omar could talk about them too. (Manny, Dunn, Burrell, those LFs.)
I know for a fact he represents Manny
Boston fans complained that Manny was never really a problem until he dropped his agent and went with Boras last year. He was quirky, but he was never really selfish or destructive. Simmons had a lengthy article about it (one of his best articles in years, IMO).
