Manny the Met?
The New York Mets are now looking into more options as free agency resumed after the signing of Mark Teixeira.
The Mets have reportedly offered pitcher Derek Lowe a 3-year offer. They are also interested in bringing back pitchers Oliver Perez and Pedro Martinez.
One player that continues to show little to no interest from any team is Manny Ramirez.
The Dodgers, his former team, appears to be interested in Manny but isn't making any sudden movement to sign the slugger.
ESPN reported this week that the Dodgers are intersted in both Adam Dunn and Bobby Abreu. Both outfielders and could take Manny's spot in the Outfield.
The Mets according to Jason Stark of ESPN are likley to pass on Manny Ramirez.
We however have seen in the past that the media made the same mistake with the Yankees likley to pass on Teixeira. Well, Teixeira is now in the Bronx.
The Mets have yet to be interested in a big bat.
The position in which the Mets have a weakness at is left field with Daniel Murphey and Tatis battling for that position. This is Manny's position.
The Mets in the offseason were looking into acquireing left fielder Matt Holliday from the Rockies.
Holliday last season hit .321 with 25 homers and 88 RBIs. Manny did better than that as he hit .396 with LA, a total of 37 homers and 121 RBIs. Thats over 70 points higher a batting avg and about 10 more homers.
The question is for Manny is wheather or not he will perform well in 2009. Will he quit like he did in Boston or will he deliver like he did in LA?
It really would be a benefit for the Mets. Beltran's numbers are starting to decline, Delgado's average is slumping. David Wright, like Johan Santana needs protection. Manny could provide the same benefits he provided David Ortiz in Boston. And look what they did, won 2 titles with the duo.
The question isn't Why sign Manny, its Why Not

Reasons to not sign Manny:
- He’s old
- He’s expensive
- He’s capricious
- He’s a terrible fielder
- He’s not an especially adroit baserunner
None of this is to say that I’d object to a reasonable two-year deal, but you asked a question and I’ve answered it, I think.

Another reason
He blocks Fernando Martinez. Adam Dunn can be moved to first base when Fernando is ready. But Manny can’t play anywhere except left. Also, he’ll cost way more than our other LF options, which limits our ability to strengthen the rotation

Martinez
Ryan Church is hardly entrenched in right field, so the devil’s advocate would suggest playing Martinez there when he’s ready.

Just a suggestion
Manny would cost more than players like Dunn or Burrell. Its just possible that the Mets could become a suitor if the Dodgers say no to Manny. Manny has to end up somewere. I don’t actually think they will get him, but despite all the things you listed Eric, he’s a good hitter. I agree, Manny’s gonna half to take a 2 year deal.

yeah but
If you give Manny a 2 year deal at a reduced rate, how long before he starts to pout and becomes bad Manny? If he isn’t making what he feels he is worth it will only increase the chances of him “checking out” mentally.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

True
It should be interesting if he would play for the Mets like he did in Boston, or like he did in L.A

Either's good.
Manny’s 2008 stat line (BA/OBP/SLG)
Red Sox: .299/.398/.529
Dodgers: .396/.489./743
Yeah, LA Manny produced just crazy awesome numbers, but I’d still be happy with Boston Manny’s production. As long as Scott Boras doesn’t whisper ugly, poisonous lies in his ears.
by BobbyV_Incognito on Jan 1, 2009 1:36 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Manny in 2007: .388 OBP, .493 SLG
Manny with the Red Sox in 2008: .398 OBP, .529 SLG
Dunn in 2008: .386 OBP, .513 SLG
If you think Manny will hit in 2009 like he did with the Dodgers in 2008, then signing him is a no-brainer. If you think his performance in his last season and a half with the Red Sox is more indicative of his future performance, he’s not worth a whole ton more money than Dunn is.

But
Beltran isn’t declining yet.
Who's world is it? It's yours.

Especially not defensively.
Sure, his power numbers have declined somewhat over the past couple of years. But there’s no doubt that he’s still a great hitter.

I disagree
Remember, his knees have been screwed up and he was coming off two knee surgeries last year, so I doubt he was able to work out his legs much in the offseason. Let’s see what Beltran does this season with a full offseason to work out his legs.

I think his power numbers declining is pretty important
When you factor in our other main source of other middle of the line-up bat is a 35 year old 1b only signed for one year. Beltran is still a great hitter but if Delgado slugs .300 the first 3 months of the season again I imagine our line-up is going to take a major hit. Never mind 2010 and beyond.
That being said I don’t think that means you have to sign Manny. I just think it means the front office should be making a bigger push than they seem to be to replace/insure Delgado’s power.

Manny the Giant?

Three year deal….with an option…..and we get to watch Manny get his 600th homer in Blue and Orange.
Despite all the negativity, this punk has batted .314 lifetime, has a .541 slugging percentage, and has rarely had a season where he missed any large amount of playing time (year 2000 only 118 games).
He can flat out hit and there is no indication of any skills decline. Sure, he sucks in the field…but how many games can you say he “lost” for the Sox versus “won?”
Do the math and this is a no brainer….Find the money Omar and get us back on the back pages again. Fuck the Highlanders and their deal with the devil….get Manny and you can shine up a spot in the new trophy case for our title.

sorry, that was .593 slugging percentage
And I don’t see the “decline” in power numbers you suggest…
Slugging percentages since 2005:
.594
.619
.493
.601
Home runs in same period:
45
35
20
37
37
The “dip” or decline is related to his “off” year in 2007….batting only .296 and batting in 88. Shit man, only cause he is Manny are those “bad” numbers….the only problem here is we don’t have Endy anymore to be his “defensive” replacement!

Who cares about getting back on the back pages?
As a professional sports franchise, the Mets’ main concern ought to be getting back to the playoffs and winning the World Series. Sign Manny, sign Dunn. Just sign whoever will make the team better without crippling our budget, not because we’re trying to show the Yankees ours is bigger.

Our's is bigger though! (For you B-V)

Giving Manny a player option would be silly
Remember what he pulled this year?

I’d rather sign Dunn for reasons stated…in fact I’d rather overpay for Dunn than pay market for Manny, although that hardly seems likely as I’ve heard nothing about Dunn anywhere..which is ridiculous and probably something to do with all the retarded crap wrote about him striking out while ignoring his OBP and his immense power.
by Ohpityme on Jan 3, 2009 7:59 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I don't know if I'd go that far
I like Dunn as much as the next guy, but I’d rather pay a reasonable amount of money for Manny than overpay for Dunn
by JoshNY on Jan 5, 2009 5:07 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I imagine it's a mix
Of his defense making it hard for an nl team to find him attractive long-term, especially since he’ll likely continue to decline defensively and, I know I personally wouldn’t be as favorable toward him if we didn’t have a hole at 1b opening up next year and a lot of al teams not having the need for a dh. As well as some gms who only care about strike outs and contact and refuse to acknowledge obp.

OBP + Strikeouts
A lot of fans still have the same bias. At a friend’s Christmas party a could weeks ago, I found myself talking to a Phillies fan. I thanked him for signing Ibanez and not Dunn. He responded that he’d rather have Ibanez because Dunn usually is annually a threat to lead the league in strikeouts, and Ibanez is in such incredible shape. Dude was so nice, I couldn’t bring myself to laugh at him.

He's not necessarily wrong
It’s just the fielding…

The Phillies should totally sign him to be their eighth inning guy

Yeah thats why I’m so favourable towards Dunn…assuming he can play 1b next year(hmm when is the next point in time that a good 1b option hits free agency?)…whereas I know that Manny can’t play first so is going to be stuck in LF for 3-5 years which is pretty frightening when you get to those 3,4,5 years of the contract.
That Michael Phelps vid above is hilarious…I’ve watched it about 30 times and I’m still laughing like its brand new.

glad u like
There’s another version of it out there somewhere that I’ve seen. I just can’t remember where it’s at. I hope to display a few more clips during the regular season. (Provided the bloggers don’t get too pissed off during the games.)
