My opinions on the Mets Offseason
Hi,
This is my first post on here, I'm a Mets Fan from Sheffield, England.
With that being said here are my views on what the Mets should do this offseason:
1. If the rumours are true and the Rockies will trade Huston Street for Aaron Heilman & Pedro Feliciano then I would grab that trade so fast that the Rockies GM's arm would still be attatched(I would use Street as the set-up man)
2. Sign Kerry Wood 2 years $18 mil(With a $10 mil option for a 3rd year), my reasons being Wood costs us no draft picks, is cheaper and I am confident that now he isn't starting his injury woes are behind him, also I am confident Street could fill in at closer should Wood get injured.
3. Sign either Bobby Abreu OR Adam Dunn I think there are pros for each of them that far outweigh the cons and both can be had for good value in this current economic climate my terms would be
*Abreu 3 years $39 mil
*Dunn 4 years $48 mil
Although either is a good fit I would have to pick Dunn as my favourite because of:Age, Power, OBP and that he can move to 1b next year when Delgado is gone.
Either sign or trade for a SP who can pitch 200+ innings I personally would've liked Vazquez(Because his salaries a lot cheaper than the free agent options, it was only for 2 years, hes a proven inning eater and he could have been had for nothing basically)but hes a Brave now so thats that idea gone.
Out of the options availible I would probably(Don't laugh)go for Randy Johnson on a 1 year contract at $7 mil, the way I see it its a lot better than having to guarantee 5 years to either Burnett or Lowe.
If we have to go the free agent route I'd go for Ben Sheets at 2 years $26 mil with a 3rd year option for $14 mil,his injury problems seem isolated as appose to Burnetts.
Failing that I would look to trade Luis Castillo for an out of favour pitcher on a bad contract...maybe Dontrelle Willis??? Any ideas?
My last idea (Assuming all the rest go ahead)is pretty far fetched payroll wise but I'd like to get Orlando Hudson who has made clear his wanting to play for the Mets so I'd take advantage of this to the tune of 4 years $36 mil.
Players I hope the Mets stay clear of:
Derek Lowe: Not that I have a problem with Derek Lowe(Assuming he stays in the NL) its just I'd have a problem paying him over $14 mil a year and more than 3 years.
AJ Burnett: Injury prone, good years come in contract years and he too wants a 5 year contract which he won't be healthy for.
Manny Ramirez:Do I really need to explain this.
What do you think?

Sheffield?
Well alright, then. Welcome to the fray.
Can’t really argue with most of what you’ve set forth up there. I haven’t heard much of anything with regard to the market for Ben Sheets, so I don’t know whether he’s willing to take a 2-3 year deal but if that was an option I’d hope Omar would go for it. Luis Castillo for Dontrelle? Don’t see that happening but, again, if that deal was available I’d hope we’d take it. Manny? If he’d settle for 3 years or less, I say go for it. Sadly, that’s not gonna happen.
'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

Sheffield is in the North of England(I believe we supplied the steel for the Brooklyn bridge…random trivia)
Most of my rantings were best case scenario although I can’t see Sheets getting much more than that.
The Castillo for Willis is optimistic at best, because I doubt Castillo could play SS…what about maybe for Zito if the Giants ate a bit of his contract?
Would you still take Manny after everything, he is an amazing hitter but I still don’t think ~I could stomach signing him.
It is pretty frightening the lack of sense involvedin the articles I’ve read about the Mets potential offseason signings WHY OH WHY Ibanez???
I mainly disagree with
The signing of Abreu. He’s a bad fielder and leaves us no options for Murphy/Evans, especially if we intend to move someone to first after Delgado leaves. A Murphy or Carp/Evans split at first would probably play alright, but I’m always a bit skeptical of platoons. Signing Abreu kind of cripples many options we have. That and I don’t think he’ll age particularly well.
And we should stay away from Orlando Hudson. We don’t need to be paying our second baseman in the area of 50+ million for pretty average play when we have a young player for free to do the job.
I’d love Manny honestly… he’s still a great hitter and a surprisingly decent fielder away from Fenway if we believe the statistics out there.. and I’ve always imagined him with the Mets.
Welcome to AA!
Who's world is it? It's yours.
Keep away from Abreu
Besides what’s already been mentioned, signing Abreu doesn’t solve any real problems we have, it just creates a logjam of corner OFs. Abreu is a bit better than Church, but he’s also older and more expensive, and worse defensively. Stay far, far away from that dude.
However, I cannot endorse enough the signings of Adam Dunn and Randy Johnson. Seriously Omar, you need to do that like rightthehellnow. Johnson still has a year or two left in the tank, his peripherals are still strong, and he’s definitely motivated to win #300. Dunn is the second best hitter on the market, after Manny, and he comes with the added bonus of not being an insane man-child. Also, Dunn isn’t represented by the Agent of Darkness, and can move to first in 2010.

I don't know how I feel
about aging lefties going for their 300th win. Been there, done that, ended badly. Plus I’ve never been a fan of Randy Johnson, for various reasons.
Lefties
I’d say Glavine worked out rather well for the Mets purely from a production standpoint. He did himself no favors by pitching his poorest in his first and last games as a Met, but on the whole his five years in Queens fell somewhere between “good” and “quite good”.
what's funny
is that I became quite a Glavine supporter in the years in between. I always stuck up for him when people said he wasn’t a “true Met” (what the hell does that even mean?) But that last game, or more accurately, that last 1/3 of an inning was the most disappointed I’ve ever been in a professional athlete, and honestly maybe in anyone. I had stuck up for him for years only for him to lay that crapper out there! And to top it all off he goes back to the Braves, which is where all his haters thought his heart was all along. So now he’s just about my least favorite non-steroid-using ball player of the past decade
Seems presumptuous
to say he wasn’t a steroid user. I’m not sure we can say that with any certainty about any ballplayer. At least, I can’t.
i like most of that
definitely like the wood/street back of the bullpen. considering what we’d have to give to get putz/k-rod in terms of players and money, thats a very good option.
i’m not crazy about dunn but i like him, for the reasons you mentioned (especially moving to first next year) but i’d try for 3yrs as it sounds like the market is low on him…i avoid abreu as hes not much better than a murphy/tatis/evans platoon.
i agree that the unit has something left but he won’t leave the west coast, let alone come back to ny.
as far as a starter, i’m big on andy sonnanstine from the rays as a cheap, effective #4. thats assuming the rays don’t try to hold us up for an average starter especially when they need to deal him because of david price.
i agree about avoiding any of the longterm FA pitchers and honestly I won’t go past 3yrs for anyone.
my one difference, i’d go hard after manny. yes he comes with baggage and his D isn’t great but at a certain point you have to just look past the BS and realize hes may be the best hitter in baseball (outside of pujols). yes hes 36 but hes still OPSing over 1.000 and yes he has issues but if you’re offered a ferrari with a bent fender and a cracked windshield are you going to say no? especially since the attitude stuff has gotten very overblown (he was a leader in the LA clubhouse!) i’d give him a very big 3yr offer.
