Open Thread - Game #14: Mets vs. Nationals (04/17/2008)

Washington Nationals at New York Mets, Apr 17, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

Will this be the night that Nelson Figueroa turns back into a pumpkin? After a ridiculously good start last time out, Figgy looks to prove that his first start in 47 years wasn't a fluke.

Here's the lineup for the Mets

Jose Reyes,SS
Ryan Church, RF
David Wright, 3B
Carlos Delgado, 1B
Angel Pagan, LF
Brady Clark, CF
Luis Castillo, 2B
Raul Casanova, C
Nelson Figueroa, P

Carlos Beltran is out with a stiff neck. Must be from watching all of those pitches sail by him for walks. Brian Schneider has stunk up the joint against two lefties so far this series so Willie is giving Raul Casanova a crack at John Lannan tonight, also a lefty. When was the last time the Mets faced three lefty starters in a three-game series?

Is Clark any good on defense?

I can’t remember seeing him play and I’m too old to figure out his Zone Rating or FRAA jazz

by Simons on Apr 17, 2008 7:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Clark's defense

It’s not perfect (nor is any stat) but FRAA says Clark was pretty good in 2004 and 2005 (playing mostly right field in 2004, entirely in center in 2005) and average over the remainder of his career. Not as good as Beltran or Endy but I don’t think he’ll hurt us out there.

I liked it better when we were crushing this guy

Did Randy St. Clair teach him the splitter after the first inning?

oh i see

the bat tapped the catcher’s mitt on the backswing, interference, they sent JBR back to first. On the replay it didn’t look like a foul tip

Ugh

This game is killing me.

by Eric Simon on Apr 17, 2008 8:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

this is like some kind of nightmare

Not the horror-movie kind… the kind where everything seems to be going wrong in extreme slow motion, and you have to watch it all fall apart and are powerless to prevent it even though it should be easy to fix. It’s like watching a car crash at 1/10 speed here, and none of the Mets seems to be able to steer.

On the bright side

Great work by Figueroa

hey now

i guess the nats pitcher is on tonight. that’ll happen. these guys are in the majors for a reason. if we end up losing this game, we can say figgy had another solid start and the nats pitcher was on his game tonight. we took 2/3. we won another series. no big deal. let’s not turn this into metsblog or anything.

And there it is

I simply can’t wrap my mind around this one.

by Eric Simon on Apr 17, 2008 9:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

just as an aside,

I absolutely cannot understand why Willie Harris ever makes it into a game for the Nationals, as loaded as they are with outfielders. I know, I know, defensive replacement, but even giving him a couple at-bats in close and late situations just seems like such a waste when you’ve got Wily Mo Peña, Milledge, and Kearns.

by SQUAD on Apr 17, 2008 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed,

but it’s a matter of slight importance. The bullpen has done and is doing its job splendidly in this game already; if the Mets lose at this point the blame has to land squarely on the bats (just as the ball has failed to do).

by anonymous on Apr 17, 2008 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the point is well taken

but while the issue is still “how do we win?” rather than “why did we lose?”, making stupid pitching choices negatively hurts our chances of winning. later on, we can say, well, that stupid pitching move was/would have been irrelevant because of/if not for the bats. as it stands, that choice may make the actual difference between win and loss.

by jadelane on Apr 17, 2008 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bunting

OK, so whether bunting in certain situations is worthwhile is an issue for another day.

Here’s what I don’t get. I don’t get bunting with players who clearly are NOT good at it. (Casanova here, Belliard earlier.)

by JoshNY on Apr 17, 2008 10:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow

I’ve never seen someone with such good speed be so bad at stealing bases. In his defense it took a perfect throw to nail him, but still, what was he thinking?

what the crap could Church have been thinking bunting there?

by anonymous on Apr 17, 2008 11:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm sure

He was thinking, “I like hitting second, and Willie told me to bunt, so I bunt.”

by Eric Simon on Apr 17, 2008 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

why are we sure it was Willie's call?

Just because the odds on him making a dumb decision are higher?

by anonymous on Apr 17, 2008 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes.

That’s not enough? I’m not sure it was Willie’s call, I’m just using the overwhelming body of empirical evidence supporting the case for Willie’s mild retardation with respect to in-game strategery.

by Eric Simon on Apr 17, 2008 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah,

you’re right, that is a pretty convincing case. I guess I just have a hangover from Church’s last ill-advised bunt apparently being his own decision.
