love what they've done with the lineup!

Anytime So Taguchi gets a start against the Mets, I’m happy.

They're still pretty dangerous

We’ll see if Johan is able to keep them in the park.

Well, it's good to know

that their catcher can’t catch, either.

one run is good

but that makes like six frozen ropes right at the infielder in the last 24 hours

by Simons on Apr 18, 2008 7:16 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

great

I guess it’s Sunday that the Mets and Phils play on ESPN, not Friday. Instead we get NBA Playoff Preview and some show called E:60

fuck you, espn

Totally classless.

Staying in the game

So Reyes is not as soft as Beltran then

(heh)

by Simons on Apr 18, 2008 8:00 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

lol

Beltran would be at 85% after that.

Santana is doing great

He threw a lot of pitches in the first two innings, but this is the kind of performance you expect from him.

Question

I was at the game where he was booed, but could it have been a good thing?

Johan was a notorious slow starter in Minnesota. Could playing for a more demanding fan base light a fire under this guy earlier in the season? Could the Mets fan base elevate Santana to even greater heights?

They were just talking about that on TV (if you didn't know)

Like Ronnie said, I think it does help to pitch on the road after that happens. But I guarantee it won’t happen again unless he starts pitching horribly.

johan santana

doesn’t need idiots booing to know the stakes is high and to step his game up. The Met fan base just sounded like unappreciative idiots that night.

Just saying...

I didn’t agree with it and stood up and cheered myself.

BUT

The guy IS a slow starter. Just saying a rabid fan base could get him going a bit sooner. I don’t think its a ridiculous theory.

i think its is a ridiculous theory

he played on teams that won their divisions and were considered contenders. It wasn’t like he was in Tampa.

by DoctorK16 on Apr 18, 2008 8:29 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My alternate theory

Santana wouldn’t be the first player from a warm climate to get off to slow starts while playing in cold weather

You're misinterpreting my point...

but pitching in front of Twins fans is like pitching at Carnegie Hall. He was worshipped there so there was no sense of urgency in the first half for him.

i just have a problem

attributing good things to silly booing that happens at Shea.

Feeling good about my K prediction

Just got home; looks like a good game.

Question for people who've been watching the whole game

Have there been any really controversial plays so far this game? I just got a text from a buddy who’s a Phils fan saying “Umps can fuck themselves. Total bull shit.”

by JoshNY on Apr 18, 2008 8:45 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i think the zone is what he must be refering too

he has no complaint though. Hammels is getting the same calls

This Johan fellow

he’s pretty good, I think.

When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."

They IBB Beltran to load them with nobody out

Crazy, or crazy like a fox? You be the judge! Or, let’s just see what Delgado do

by Simons on Apr 18, 2008 9:07 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Beltran IBB

Cholly was praying to get out of this inning with only one run allowed, that’s why he walked Beltran, it increases his chances of allowing the one run, but decreased the chances of the Mets putting up a big inning

Dunno

But he’s not getting the job done. Is he getting tapped when things are already underwater?

At least Felice got the job done and got us out of the inning.

Oopsie Bootsie!

(The cynical side of me thinks about making a crack that Howard should go out for soccer?)

Now, can the Mets get someone home on a bases full, 1-out situation?

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
