Open Thread - Game #18: Mets vs. Cubs (04/21/2008)
New York Mets at Chicago Cubs, Apr 21, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
I'm testing out some of our data widgets here, so bear with me. There's a lot of neat functionality built into the platform here, including on-the-fly data presentation like what you see above. No more screencapping of the MLB probable pitcher graphic, which is nice.
John Maine goes tonight, and I haven't been particularly impressed with any of his regular season starts to this point. His control has been spotty and he has been terribly inconsistent.

fukudome
you’d think that the cubs would want such a high OBP guy at the top of the lineup, but apparently not.
that's at least
the 5th mention of the collapse and the 1st inning isn’t even over yet. jesus christ.
Wonderful call on the hit and run
Best time to do it is with a real contact hitter like Casanova… hmm
maybe I am crazy
But I still think Delgado has a chance to turn it around and be at least a semi-productive player again. That was a nice base hit there.
his BABIP is extremely low
coupled with the high LD%, means he’s getting very unlucky right now
nice double endy!
My hunch
The distribution of locations of balls Delgado puts in play is extremely pull-heavy
Defenses play him like that
Because defenses are effectively defending a smaller area of field a lot of the time, his BABIP will continue to be low
So either he needs to start using the rest of the field more while teams are overshifting him, or he needs to start hitting the ball over the right fielder’s head.
Wow
I think Zambrano puts more effort into swinging the bat as hard as possible than anybody else I’ve ever seen
If he gets out of this
he will be God. Remember that he also saved Feliciano’s ass on Saturday.
Fight J-Roll the A-Holl!
Did Willie blow it?
Bases loaded. 2 outs. Ball in foul territory rolling toward third. Cubs runner on third (Derek Lee???) picks it up. No call. No protest.
Rule 7.09: It is interference by a batter or a runner when he intentionally deflects the course of a foul ball in any manner. Penalty for interference: the runner is out and the ball is dead.
I didn't know that rule
Of course, I’m not the manager of a major league baseball team.
Bobby V. would’ve known that.
