Bonds, Barry Bonds

We need to sign him and hand him a 1B mitt.  Yes there is baggage, but this team has plenty itself after the collapse. The fact is that if this team wants to compete and turn things around they need to improve their lineup.  Bonds can still hit, and I'm sure if Ryan Howard can "play" 1B then Bonds can do the same.  Cut Delgado and bring up Abreu to backup Bonds at 1B.

Is this somewhat drastic?  Perhaps.  But I think the lineup would actually go from whimpering to scary real fast with the addition of Bonds.

Reyes SS, Beltran CF, Wright 3B, Bonds 1B, Alou LF, Church RF, Schneider C, Castillo 2B, Pitcher.

Git R done.

That would be interesting

When the topic of Bonds first came up I thought “no Fu**ing way” Now not so much. I can’t say your idea is too crazy. I don’t see it happening, but I think it’s closer to possible than before.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

No way.

Bonds at 1B? The guy couldn’t even play LF in the end. You think a guy in semi-retirement wants to learn a new position? You think I want Jason Giambi over there?? :-)

1B is not that difficult.

LF involves running around a lot, and he was just as good as Alou was out there anyway.

There are many examples of butchers who play 1B. Ryan Howard, Delgado this season, Giambi, etc. No one cares about their D when they’re hitting well. That’s why they’re at 1B. Miggy Cabrera and Pujols both switched to 1B mid season.

And yes, I know Piazza couldn’t handle it, but he is literally the only example I can think of who couldn’t handle 1B. Bonds was a great athlete in his day and even at this age, I think he is still a better athlete than Piazza. He could totally handle 1B.

Also, if Bonds wants a shot at 3,000 hits and a WS ring he’ll learn 1B.

Would Pedro the Lesser be willing to give up #25?

I know I would be willing to retrofit my Matsui t-shirt.

rumor has it

That Alou will start taking ground balls at first.

If Moises switched to 1B, it might help him stay healthy (ha ha ha) and it would allow Pagan to stay in the lineup.

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

When Willie benches Delgado

I’ll believe it. Until then, it’s only wishful thinking (although I’m one of the few who doesn’t think Delgado is done done done…)

I don't think he's done done done either

But he needs to alter his approach. If he can’t consistently hit line drives to the right side to get the ball over or through the shift (and while the ability to do so might still be there, he’s clearly not doing so at the moment), he needs to take what he’s being given to the opposite field. I can understand why he’s being stubborn here since he’s been successful doing what he’s been doing for a long time, but he needs to get over that.

I'm intrigued

But I have concerns about the ability and willingness of Bonds to learn a new position. Sooner or later someone in the AL is going to want him to be their DH (or someone in either league is going to want him to be their LF) and I think he’s perfectly content to wait for that to happen.

Doubftul

I can’t think of any time when Barry Bonds seemed perfectly content.

if nothing else

omar should be talking to boras about bonds staying in shape, so that bonds can be ready to go if we need him circa the allstar break. bonds comes with the obvious baggage but if we’re still playing like this (ie shit) come mid season you need to do SOMETHING to shake up the team. Bonds is quickest and easiest way to add runs, so keep him as an option.

by kendynamo on Apr 26, 2008 11:45 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

how?

How is he gonna stay in shape? He can’t run or bike on those knees, and no strength trainer worth his salt would come near him with a ten foot syringe.

A sign-and-trade for Adam Dunn should happen. The Reds can’t keep him and they might be interested in getting something back for him.

besides jazzercising

swimming and working out in a pool is a pretty common and effective way for people with knee injuries to get/stay in shape.

i like the idea of a dunn sign and trade but i doubt the mets have the farm chips to get him.

we have no

pieces available to trade for Adam Dunn short of Fernando Martinez. None what so ever.

Ken,

You summed up my entire point. Bravo. Let’s hope they have the guts to pull the trigger if they have to.

Bonds

The Mets are the most risk averse organization ever. They thought Lasto rapping and high fiving was a liability. They’re not bring the media down on them by signing Bonds. It is a fantasy it will never happen.
