Open Thread - Game #7: Mets vs. Phillies (04/09/2008) on SNY

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets, Apr 9, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

I don't even want to talk about the game. The Mets have been one big heaping pile of stinky against the Phillies (and everyone else, for that matter), so I'm not going to further analyze anything tonight. I just want to see the Mets go out and play mistake-free baseball. I'd like to see a good start out of Mike Pelfrey for his own sake as well as that of the Mets.

Darryl Strawberry will be joining the SNY team beginning April 28. He will work with Matt Yallof on the pre- and post-game segments from SNY's studios. No word yet on whether he will get his suits from the same place as Maz.

Scott Schoeneweis was visibly shaken by the Shea fans' reaction to his name during yesterday's opening ceremonies. I'm not a booer, and I'll never understand giving a player shit for going out there and doing his job, shabbily as he may do it. I'll curse him out in the privacy of my home, but it's just disrespectful to bring that to the game. Stay classy, Mets fans; you're better than that.

Are Mets fans

really better than that? History would indicate otherwise.

yeah that sucks for schoe

but hes also rich, so i pretty much dont care. if this was some minor league call up trying to make the roster and sucking, like gomez last year, i'd probably feel different. but schoe and his $10+ mil contract and mlb pension can toughen up.

by kendynamo on Apr 9, 2008 7:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

plus

Baseball stadiums are one of the last sporting venues where the unwashed masses can show up and have their voices heard. Tickets are getting more expensive, we should enjoy this while it lasts.

new nats park

dude, you should see how much they jacked up prices at the new nationals stadium. granted, rfk was a dump, but i'd take decent outfield bleachers for 5-10 bucks there over the $37 they go for now.

nice start for Pelfrey

Hope he can keep it up for a while.

What just happened there? Did someone else take Reyes's place?

by anonymous on Apr 9, 2008 7:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yea

Me confused.

by Eric Simon on Apr 9, 2008 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oooh yea

That's how these games are supposed to start.

by Eric Simon on Apr 9, 2008 7:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

my goodness.

Well, that's how the top-of-the-order formula is supposed to work!

Fuck you

Shane Victorino.

by Eric Simon on Apr 9, 2008 7:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

seriously

He came up limping yesterday after the collision and still he seems to get to everything. Jerk.

by anonymous on Apr 9, 2008 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Delgado

He's like the big guy of old. Taking walks, hitting bombs. What gives?

by Eric Simon on Apr 9, 2008 7:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Claudio Vargas

Mets are close to signing him to a minor league deal, per Kenny Rosenthal.

by Eric Simon on Apr 9, 2008 7:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

good move

Fifth-starter depth is one area this team is ending up reasonably strong: Pelfrey, Armas, Vargas, ets. Just hope they don't also end up being fourth and third starters.

it's probably

because of his tendency to bite his tongue

by JohnPeterson on Apr 9, 2008 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bright side

The two singles were on the ground and weren't hit hard. Good news for Pelfrey.

Hahaha

"Take it easy, Lauren" -- Keith Hernandez, reacting to an "ask the booth" question about the Mets' lack of energy perhaps being a holdover from last season's collapse.

by Eric Simon on Apr 9, 2008 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

anyone else

think its weird that pagan is hitting second? you want to give dwright all the RBI opportunities as possible but id rather have his high OBP batting there and move beltran and delgado up than put in pagan, just cause he can, i dunno, bunt or some shit

by kendynamo on Apr 9, 2008 7:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

well yeah

do you expect willie to understand that though?

by ChrisMcCown on Apr 9, 2008 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, nice walk

my reverse jinx worked

by kendynamo on Apr 9, 2008 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

In general, though Pagan has five walks so far this year.

by Eric Simon on Apr 9, 2008 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yea, you know me

DW should be batting second or fourth

but willie subscribes to the scrappy #2 hitter school of thought

by JohnPeterson on Apr 9, 2008 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Those were balls

Close, but balls. Six walks in two innings, and there's still a good chance he gets out of this shit with just the one run he allowed in the first.

by Eric Simon on Apr 9, 2008 7:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yea

let's hope not

by JohnPeterson on Apr 9, 2008 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

but what about those high pitch counts were getting - these are pyhrric victories i tell you!

by kendynamo on Apr 9, 2008 8:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

totally

Also, Reyes walked, which has to count for as much as 2 or 3 wins at this point, at least in terms of frequency.

by anonymous on Apr 9, 2008 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is this going to be one of these games

where the Mets spoil a ton of early opportunities and then the pitcher clamps down?

by JohnPeterson on Apr 9, 2008 8:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i'm going with

"spoil a ton of early opportunities, give up a bunch of runs on their own, and then it doesn't matter how bad their starter was"

by ChrisMcCown on Apr 9, 2008 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by JohnPeterson on Apr 9, 2008 8:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

by anonymous on Apr 9, 2008 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

delgado

hitting the ball hard so far this year. encouraging. nice play by jenkins.

maybe delgado isn't done yet

by JohnPeterson on Apr 9, 2008 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wayne Hagin annoys me (again)

Motherfucker, learn to use the subjunctive when you're spinning out complicated what-if scenarios. You can't be saying "two runs are in and someone else is in scoring position IF that ball isn't caught" in the middle of calling a game.

by anonymous on Apr 9, 2008 8:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

who

is Wayne Hagin?

by JohnPeterson on Apr 9, 2008 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Chuch needs to change that intro song. Larry has forever corrupted that song.

by sireric on Apr 9, 2008 8:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Pelfrey

He really needs a changeup. I think he'll be good, but right now hitters are making too solid contact off him. A changeup, used about 5% of the time, would really help.
