Shea Stadium Seating and Tour Question

Hey everyone,

I am visiting NY this summer, and plan on adding Shea to my stadium list before it's torn down. I am planning on going to a game on July 8th 9th, or 10th. Any answers and tips to my questions would be greatly appreciated!

What are the best tickets to get? I don't want to spend much more than $25-30, but would like decent seats. Is there a certain section to avoid, or try to sit in?

Do they offer tours of Shea Stadium? I go on a tour of most parks I visit, and I don't want to miss out on Shea, but couldn't find anything on the Mets website.

Finally, is there anything in or around Shea that I shouldn't miss visiting while at the game?

Thank you!

the shea experience

We’ve talked about some of this here before, so you could look through past diaries/fanposts for general visiting advice.

Seats: If I you really want a decent view of the game you might want to spend a little more than $30 and go for mezzanine box seats. The upper deck is certainly a great part of the Shea experience, well remembered by anybody who grew up as a Mets fan, but it can feel like you’re miles from the game up there. And the upper part of the mezzanine section can feel unpleasantly overhung and leave you unable to see fly balls. There’s no particular part of the park you need to get seats in, and seats over the outfield still have a fine view.

Tour: I have no idea if there’s an official Shea tour. I’d advise just showing up a couple hours before game time and walking around—but leave some time to look around the new stadium from the parking lot, less than an hour inside Shea’s sticky halls should be fine.

Nearby: You’ll still be able to do this from Citi Field, but there’s only one way to get the full Shea experience, and that is to ride the 7 train to and from the game. Driving is not the same (nor is worrying about parking). Ideally after the game you’d walk under the elevated tracks into downtown Flushing and get Chinese (or Korean, or Indian) food before getting back on the subway at Main Street.

experience

Yeah just stroll through and around Grand Central.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Great,

thanks!
In Shea, are you allowed to visit every part of the park with any type of ticket? I like to see as much of the park if possible.

almost

With any ticket you can pretty much roam around three sections: Loge (second level), Mezzanine (third), and Upper Deck (fourth). It will be hard to get down to the Field Level early in the game, but you probably can get down there in the later innings, although it might involve some trickery.

If the game is crowded, it will be harder to check out different sections—there’s really no standing room that affords you a view of the game. And if you are standing around, some ushers might make you move.

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

All you gotta do

slip the attendant a 20 and he’ll find you a spot at field level.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
