Open Thread - Game 36: Mets vs. Nationals
Washington Nationals at New York Mets, May 12, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
Discussion starter: The NYCEDC is working to develop Willets Point, the dumpy, chop-shop-infested area around Shea. Are you in favor of the development effort?

I'll believe it when I see it
There has been talk that the chop-shops will be redeveloped into a shopping and walking neighborhood for so many years now that Willets Point seems a lot like an aging, injured ballplayer that keeps promising an imminent return to the lineup and then keeps getting reinjured again. Honestly, anything at all would be preferable to the junkyards and parking lots that surround Shea, but it would be a huge surprise to me if a pleasant pedestrian neighborhood emerged there within the next, say, fifteen years.

As I understand it
The development plan is in the public approval stages, and business owners are making a stink about having to relocate. And by “making a stink” I mean “holding out for more money”. The place is a morass of structural, commercial, and environmental decay and it’s unfortunate that Shea patrons - both locals and visitors - have to get in their cars and skee-daddle as quickly as possible upon conclusion of the game because there is nothing to do around the ballpark.

atlantic center II, anyone?
IIRC, NYSEDC is responsible for that piece of garbage. The original mall there was such a slum, the most exciting part of it was the DMV office. It was just a tax ripoff to line the pockets of that pig Ratner. He kept it a dump for 15 years to collect the incentive payments and depress surrounding values for the next phase of his master plan. So by all means, let’s give another billionaire fatcat a gov’t welfare check. (Sorry, it’s a touchy subject for me.)

Carlos "The Rally Killer" Delgado
Strikes again. Why hasn’t someone slashed his Achilles yet?
And I don’t miss Mike Jacobs right now at all. Really.

this isn't Oz
but if it were, I would want Delgado’s protection

I've said before,
If I was going ho’ing in the Caribbean somewhere I would absolutely want Carlos as a wingman. We could bring Reyes along and just make him fetch us beers all night and bring Beltran along and just make fun of him all night. It would be a blast. CD would be a great drinking buddy and wingman.
But as far as a first baseman and a contributor to my favorite team – I want nothing less than a crippling injury to befall him, because it’s obvious that Omar isn’t going to realize what a mistake he’s made and what a joke Delgado is and make a move around him.

What are you talking about?
Delgado raked early on, especially including the playoffs in 2006. They were comparable players last year with a slight edge to Delgado. Then he got older and Jacobs matured and now Jacobs is (thus far this season, in any case) a better player. That’s how it WORKS when you trade away young talent for established players.
And in any case, Jacobs still hasn’t developed any plate patience (just 4 walks so far this season and 31 all of last year; Delgado’s OBP is STILL higher this year even though his batting average is in the toilet) and he’s a bad fielder (without old age as an excuse like Delgado has).
Also, Delgado’s low BABIP (.255) as compared to his average line drive rate (18.3%) suggests that he’s been somewhat unlucky so far this year, in the batting average department anyway.

Anyone else...
Notice that Glendon Rusch got dumped by the Padres last week. Have watched many of their games and he hadn’t been throwing too badly. Wouldn’t mind bringing him in to fill the “Human Pinata” role currently occupied by Jorge Sosa.

I couldn't be angrier...
That Nick Johnson shaved his mustache. He had a freakin’ awesome porn ‘stache going on up until today.

Wow.
Figgy got away with one there.

agree
With Keith. Shit pitch on 3-2, even if he did just crush the fastball the pitch before. Nationals hitting .235 as a team, you gotta challenge guys.

Perez is making him look bad
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

we might need to warn the Shea Stadium security team about this one

listening on radio
is his bat slow tonight or is it a bad eye again?

Lefties are hitting .191 against Odalis Perez this year
by Simons on May 12, 2008 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're not seriously defending him, are you?
Carlos Delgado is hitting .196 since April 10 (103 at-bats). So that begs the question: WHY IS HE IN THE LINEUP? If Odalis Perez is SO tough on lefties and Delgado can’t hit anyone, why is he playing? Delgado is absolutely worthless. There is nothing redeeming about him on this team and he is an anchor on this team. We will never know how much he is really holding us back. Just imagine if we had someone hitting .270 there? Dare to dream. Oh wait, we’re paying this guy how many million? 13.

Ask Willie
It’s the manager’s (bad) decision to play a cold Delgado against a lefty who’s been murder against lefties this year.
by JoshNY on May 12, 2008 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
lefties, righties, doesn't matter
The guy is no long a Major League-caliber hitter and should not be playing everyday. Don’t know if he’s really 48 years old, or if he’s off the juice, or if he’s just washed up. But he shouldn’t be playing. He should have had a short leash coming into this season and after a terrible April he should have been yanked.
by Doc's Sports Picks Guru on May 12, 2008 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But he hasn't been
And he’s hitting passably thus far in May. Granted both of the HR came in one game, but his May numbers are way up from April.

hey, that hit the shirt, not the guy
recount!

darn
I liked all those skinny numbers.
I’m sure Jayson Stark has something to say about highest number of one-run innings in a game.

Figgy
I’ve only been watching off and on, but shouldn’t he have allowed a dozen runs by now?

the only question left is...
who drives (sosa or figueroa) the rental car to AAA?

seriously
why is the club protecting sosa? i can pitch on days in a row and come in for long relief too, but that doesn’t mean i should have a job in the big leagues.

I just don't understand...
How we keep trotting Sosa out there. How is this guy seriously still on the roster. A WHIP of nearly 2.00 and an ERA over 6.00. Yet, he is tied for the team lead in appearances.

Wow, we're slackers
I just popped over to the SBN Indians site to check the comments about the triple play tonight (Asdrubal Cabrera turned an unassisted one, 14th in MLB history) and there are like 630 posts on their game thread.

Wright grounds out with the bases loaded and 2 out
God, what an asshole. He is so not clutch.

blasphemer!
I know you’re trying to make a point, but such heresy cannot stand uncontested.
by mmxii on May 12, 2008 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
if Beltran homers here in the 9th
does that make him more clutch or less?
by Simons on May 12, 2008 10:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
hmm
beltran has hit well recently. zablanc has not made an appearance. correlation? you tell me.
