After Mets' loss, Nelson Figueroa calls Nationals 'bunch of softball girls'

Figgy may be on his way out, but he's not leaving without first taking some potshots at the Nats.

stay classy, Nelson

Don’t miss this gem from the end of the article:

“At times it seemed like every pitch wouldn’t work,” Figueroa said. “I literally tried to throw balls down the middle just to let them hit it. When they did, they fouled off six or seven pitches in a row.”

This worries me a lot more than Figueroa’s bitching about the Nationals’ antics. Shouldn’t somebody tell him he’s not supposed to be trying to give up hits to the other team?

I don't think that's necessarily the case

Seaver and Darling have both said, if I’m not mistaken, that when a pitcher is struggling with his control, he often needs to remember that he’s got eight guys behind him playing defense, so the pitcher should let them do their jobs. Clearly Figueroa didn’t mean he was trying to give up hits (that just makes no sense), he meant he was trying to throw pitches that the batters would put in play, hopefully for outs.

yeah, I know

I understand that sometimes a pitcher wants to try to get a ball in play—though we should remember that there’s an active debate about how much control over balls in play pitchers actually have, and the current consensus is it’s less than you might expect. And I was partly joking. But even to continue seriously, Figueroa didn’t say anything about getting ground balls or soft pop-ups. He said he tried to throw the ball over the middle of the plate. Sounds a little too much like batting practice to me.

THE NEW FACE OF THE METS...ENTHUSIASM!!

I don't have too much to add gang. I think the picture speaks for itself. I'm not too much of a stats geek, I just go off of what I see from the players and the Win / Loss column. This pic was taken from Thursday's phenomenal game against the hated Phillies! I can't remember the last time David Wright got this excited about scoring a run or making a play. It really feels good to see the entire team enjoying a win. The team desperately needed this. I NEEDED THIS from David Wright. It just gives me goose bumps.
